  1. At last report Tostitios were not made on dedicated lines. richard
  2. Rule of thumb is that three months would be long enough, but everybody reacts differently. Nobody can say how long it takes any given person to be positive again. Why is she doing this. Did some sort of symptoms improvew while she was gluten-free? If so and if she had positive blood tests before and if the biopsy was even borderline (many celiac disease...
  3. My food bill is actually lower than when I wasn't gluten-free. I know that gluten-free noodles aren't cheap but home-made spaghetti sauce is VERY cheap. Watch for sales on meat. Fresh, canned or frozen veggies are cheap. Fresh fruit. Buy a bag of uncooked beans for about $1.29 and cook. If you want to get fancy add a can of tomatoes, a little ham, and...
  4. Caramel color in the U.S. is in fact always gluten-free. Many people no longer consider it anything to be concerned about. You definitely need to check on natural flavors, although that is almost always gluten-free. If you can, I'd just call their toll-free number and ask. If the company isn't cooperative, find another brand. richard
  5. Sorry, I was just being the husband of a nurse. When I talk of the flu, I'm talking about the stuff you can be vaccinated for (and I ALWAYS get those vaccines). The official definition of influenza is "an acute contagious viral infection characterized by inflammation of the respiratory tract and by fever, chills, muscular pain, and prostration. Also called...
  6. With some poeple it might be hard to tell the difference between a gluten attack and a simple virus or stomach bug. They could resemble each other in some ways. richard
  7. I simply ask if the product has wheat, rye, barley, or oats. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that unless you also don't eat products made in a facility or on a line that has gluten products. And the all you'd do is add that question. Also, I'd call when possible. Some comapnies don't answer no matter how many specifics you give or how many...
  8. I've never seen any evidence annatto is stretched by wheat gluten. It's just simply gluten-free. Which cookbook is this and did this info come from CSA? I've also never seen any evidence people with celiac would be more sensitive to it. Some people apparently are sensitive, but that includes people without celiac disease. richard
  9. No real practical advice but beware that most experts recommend the equivalent of two slices of bread for about three months for accurate results. If he gets really ill from this, that would be proof enough for me, though. richard
  10. "If medications can be absorbed into the body, blood stream and tissues through a patch, why would gluten not be absorb enough to cause a gluten reaction or DH reaction?" There are several reasons for this although I am not a science type guy so my explanation won't be complete. The patch medications that you can absorb through your skin are specifically...
  11. Even with DH glutne must be ingested to get a reaction. He might be having some sort of an allergic reaction to it, which can happen even if he has used it safely for two years. In addition, in 20 plus years of DH, I never had the DH blisters (is he having blisters?) on my underarms. richard
  12. I have yet to see a really fluffy gluten-free biscuit. They're all flat. richard
  13. Given your reaction I certainly would not tell you to eat the chips again, but as of a few months ago the plain chips, plain Ruffles, Stax and plain Fritoes were made on dedicated lines. This was from a Lay's dietician. richard
  14. If you don't want to make them and you live near a Whole Foods in Virginia, they have some pretty darn good ones they make at their bakehouse. Roben Ryberg's cookbook also has a good recipe. Mind you, gluten-free biscuits simply do not taste the same and are not fluffy. It's not quite the same. richard
  15. Yoplait, Kroger, Stoneyfield (they have a CYA statement but it's about distilled alcohol, which is gluten-free), Columbo. richard
  16. Open Original Shared Link South Portland is the only Maine location, but there are others in the Northeast. richard
  17. Kroger brand was gluten-free last year, including the spice packet. In fact, corned beef is a relatively safe item overall. richard.
  18. Given your history, I'd say there's little doubt you have celiac. I know you went through a period where you ate gluten with no problem, but that's very, very common in the teen years. In fact, it's almost normal. If you have celiac but are not allergic to gluten (these two are COMPLETELY different), then the ELISA will be negative. ELISA is NOT a test...
  19. Every time I've checked on mustard flour it's been gluten-free, but I can't guarantee you in this product. For a simple and delicious sauce, buy some Frank's Red Hot sauce and follow the directions on the back. All you do is cook the wings, mix Frank's and melted butter and pour on. Really, really good and pretty much the original Buffalo wings recipe...
  20. Regular Reese's PB cups have been gluten-free since I was diagnosed more than three years ago. That's never changed. There are different flavors and I think at least once contains cookies type pieces, but that's plainly listed. richard
  21. "Not to be mean but - what's with everyone forgetting that the "SOY" ingredients in the chocolates and candies are a huge problem for us celiac humans, it is a "NO-NO" like most celiac's I went from cake to chocolate candy and any kind of candy till I started to figure out spells... NERVE NEUROPATHY! NO... GLUTEN, WHEAT, NUTS, MALT RICE, FOOD STARCH, FOOD...
  22. Eggs, cheese and nuts all have protein. When my wife was pregnant she couldn't stand the smell of certain meats, although she still liked some. I'm sure you can do vegetarian and be pregnant, but I think you would need an experienced person guiding you. richard
  23. Laura, My apologies for being testy and taking it personally. I read too fast and it was dumb of me. Yesterday was a bad day and I should have just quit posting. I've taken that post down. richard
  24. They are gluten-free. I ignore the CSA. They're the ones who once told us to avoid annatto and also fought against the food-labeling bill. Their current president tried to torpedo the bill at the last minute. richard
