  1. Applebee's is one of the places that bascially tells us to somewhere else. I wouldn't spend my money there. richard
  2. "I was just thinking, dont they fry the fries in the same oil as the nuggets and chicken sandwitches? lots of cross contamination there." I realize that we sometimes have to speculate about things because a manufacturer won't tell us, but in the case of McD it's VERY clear and VERY easy to find out that they don't do the fries in the same oil as things...
  3. They are gluten-free. richard
  4. Blow Pops are without question gluten-free. I just went to the safe and forbidden lists here and didn't find gum base listed anywhere. Can you tell us where you saw it? In more than three years I've NEVER seen gum base with gluten. richard
  5. Some kids will get is and some won't. I don't see the possibility of them developing celiac as a reason not to have children, though. Both of mine tested negative but it turned out my father has it. richard
  6. I can't put my hands on the posts right now, but the companie(s) responsible for making all envelope glue in the U.S. are on record as saying it is corn based and completely gluten-free. Can't say about foreign companies. I think these posts were on the St. John's forum. Does this mean you can now lick envelopes? That's your decision. I mostly still wet...
  7. Fatigue -- not diarrhea -- is actually THE most common symptom of celiac. richard
  8. I can't say he's in the best of health but he has lost a bunch of weight ON PURPOSE and he did have serious heart trouble. I don't think celiac is a consideration. richard
  9. Go gluten-free and see what happens. It appears you have nothing to lose. richard
  10. Why do you think that? You do know that he just had major heart problems a few months ago and has lost weight on purpose improve his health? richard
  11. Most of the places I know in New Orleans are fairly expensive -- just like in other cities. Commander's Palace, Brennan's, Stephen's (I think that's the name), Delmonico. Others that I can't even remember the name of now. Steamed, boiled or broiled seafood should be safe just about anywhere and you should be able to find it at a huge number of restaurants...
  12. All I do is comment from my own experience. It does not sound like the DH I had. richard
  13. The vast majority of people who are overweight are indeed overweight because they eat too much and don't exercise enough. No question. But there's also no question whatsoever that there are people who have a much rougher time because of genetics, same as there are skinny people in good shape who have high blood pressure or heart trouble because of genetics...
  14. Avoiding all blue cheese simply is not necessary. Call the company. Boar's Head is gluten-free. The blue cheese used in Outbacks' blue cheese dressing is gluten-free. Kraft blue cheese dressing is gluten-free. In fact, a large percentage of American blue cheeses are started on an artificial medium, not bread. Before I say this let me make it clear that...
  15. Although one does have to avoid roux, there's lots and lots of great places we can eat in New Orleans. I love the place. richard
  16. "I think you mean me, Richard? I assume so, since I'm the only one talking about avoiding MFS. Am I missing much? Oh, I don't think so! I eat very well, thank you -- probably better than most." This is why I said in my post IF you are avoiding MFS ONLY because of a fear of gluten. It appears you are avoiding it for other reasons, which is, of course...
  17. If you are avoiding MFS because of a fear of gluten in it then you are missing out on a lot of things you can eat. All you have to do is ask the manufacturer what it's made from. Or in the case of Kraft and quite a few other companies, it will clearly say so if it's made from wheat. Same thing with "natural flavors." You have to check, but it's only very...
  18. I'd agree that all of these places have cross contamination problems or possible problems, but if you want to see what's gluten-free, go to the web page for almost any fast food place and you'll either find a list of what's gluten-free or a complete list of ingredients, with nothing hiddne. BTW, last time I checked, Arby's roast beef was indeed gluten...
  19. Canola oil is fine. richard
  20. Every hot dog I've ever seen has been gluten-free except Nathan's, so unless you're avoiding hot dogs (without the bun, of course) for a reason other than gluten, then start eating them. richard
  21. Bring your own food. This is the only sensible thing to do with any airline. richard
  22. What brand is the soup? Yeast extract is OK but I'm certainlky not going to tel you that means the soup is OK. Progresso soup clearly lists any gluten so all you have to do with theirs is read the ingredients. I am the only person in my house with celiac disease and I do most of the cooking and our dinners are "normal" and almost without exception gluten...
  23. Don't bother with Taco Bell or the sub places. BK and McD both have gluten-free lists online. richard
  24. Unless it's a company that clearly lists gluten, assuming anything about MFS is not smart. And Campbells canned soups and other foods simply are not celiac friendly. Campbells does have a gluten-free list -- all you have to do is ask. No matter what your experience it is true that the vast majority of MFS is made from something other than wheat. But that...
  25. McD has a gluten-free list at their web site. Virtually all sausage I've checked has been gluten-free, but as with any food, check with the manufacturer. That's the best way to know. richard
