  1. Always check the web site of any product. More and more are putting this info up. And if that fails, call the company. You get faster answers. Here's a paragraph straight from the web site (capital letters are mine). "At Jones Dairy Farm, we
  2. "Vinegar" is almost without exception distilled, and when it isn't, it's not made from wheat, or at least that's wat the Vienagr Insttute seems to say. I guess you could call them and ask. Here's the three types of vinegars according to them. Malt vinegar, made by the two-fold fermentation of barley malt or other cereals where starch has been converted...
  3. I don't have one but also remember that Chinese restaurants are frequently run by Asians from other countries. They might not even be able to read a card in Chinese. richard
  4. I'm pretty certain that Entrolab tests can't diagnose celiac; they show gluten sensitivity or intolerance. If she's had positive celiac blood tests you pretty already much know she's at least intolerant. richard

    ARCHIVED Traveling

First, I would urge you to carry whatever foods you can. I fill a large cooler whenever I travel. For breakfast I hardboil eggs ahead, take O'bertos beef jerky (read ingredients; two flavors have wheat), yogurt, cheese sticks, ham slices, and even cook sausage ahead and heat it up in the motel microwave. I don't know how sick your husband has been but...
  6. You can't depend on lists. richard
  7. I'll chime in as well. Oats area bad idea. A recent study showed that every brand on the market -- even McCann's -- has contamination problems. richard
  8. No matter what you googled, there are definitely gluten-free and non-gluten-free tamaris. From what I've seen, most are NOT. You have to check. richard
  9. I don't know whether it's just me, but I've never expected the doctor to know whether a med is gluten-free. I find that out myself. This is, however, tougher if you're in the hospital. The hospital pharmacy should be able to check it out. One thing you can quit worrying about is anything injected or IV. They will not have gluten. richard
  10. Did your daughter hit puberty during the time she was gluten-free? Some people suddenly go asymptomatic when they hit puberty. I've never seen any studies as to whether there's actual damage going on during this time if they're eating gluten. Some can eat gluten for years with no obvious reaction, but many return to their previous celiac pronblems eventually...
  11. All the rums I've ever checked on have been gluten-free. All Bacardi flavors are. Captain Morgan. richard
  12. Gluten's not alive so you can't "kill" it. Of course its sturcture can be destroyed at a high enough heat and probably by chemicals, but then it would also be inedible. richard
  13. Milk DOES NOT have gluten. Cows that eat grain DO NOT pass the grain properties into their milk or meat. Period. It doesn't happen. Where the heck did you get that Red? I've never found a butter or margarine that has gluten. As for ConAgra, they list any of the top eight allergens in their ingredients. The do not list barley but I don't think you're going...
  14. The experts all agree on this -- if you have DH you have or will have celiac disease. In fact, the NIH says that if you have DH you don't need to be tested for celiac disease. You can just assume you have it. Until the DH subsides you need to cut the major sources of iodine. This includes seafood and iodized salt. Getting rid of the DH can take months...
  15. Go gluten-free and see what happens. richard
  16. Standard CYA reply. I'd consider it gluten-free. richard
  17. Whole Foods lists their gluten-free stuff online. richard
  18. An elevated Iga test is rarely false positive. It usually means you have celiac disease. richard
  19. You really can't tell about celiac until the lab has seen the biopsies. The damage is microscopic and cannot be seen by the naked eye. When my GI did my biopsy he said at first that he didn't see any celiac damage. But when the lab looked at the slides the villi were completely flattened. If your doctor doesn't find another explanation and you're still...
  20. I'd use real lemons, but I know that Realemon juice is gluten-free. richard
  21. As paranoid as companies are about lawsuits, I seriously doubt Dole would claim the product was gluten-free unless they had checked the source of the ingredients. richard
  22. Whole Foods isn't the cheapest place in the world to shop no matter what you're buying. But you do pay more for quality and freshness. gluten-free baked goods are much harder to make and spoil much faster than regular baked goods. The ingredients are MUCH more expensive and you don't have the huge bulk. That adds up to a higher price. I got the cream...
  23. All Hillshire Farm cold cuts are gluten-free. Same with Carl Buddig. All but two Boar's Head (pickle loaf is one) are gluten-free. Sara Lee will give you a list. Oscar Meyer (Kraft) will clearly list any gluten in the ingredients. BUT if you get meat sliced at the counter, they MUST clean the slicer. richard
  24. According to Lay's (as of a few months ago), the Stax, plain Lay's chips and Fritos are made on dedicated lines (no flour on the line either). Everything else is on shared lines. richard
  25. "But i was pretty dismayed a few wks ago when i found a Kraft product w/ an obvious gluten source and no allergen warning on the pkg." I'm not sure that Kraft does allergen warnings, at least I don't remember them doing it. What they do is what you saw -- they clearly list gluten in the ingredients. richard
