  1. I think the reference was actiually to the hard taco shells. They would appear to me to be corn. richard
  2. Did you find it at a chain? If so, lease tell us which one. I'm still looking. richard
  3. Not only are the corn tortillas/taco shells not gluten-free because they've been dipped in oil where flour things have been cooked, but the beef in the tacos also is not safe. There's wheat in the spices, according to TB. If you want to keep eating Mexican go to a REAL Mexican restaurant and talk to the people who run it about your restrictions. Avoid...
  4. I don't have an answer to your question but most everything I've ever read indicates that 15 months is too young to test poositive on the blood tests. Something about not forming the antibodies yet. richard
  5. As always, Hershey clearly lists gluten in the ingredients. All you have to do is read them. richard
  6. I'm sorry to hear you're getting no support from your family. I've never understood this, but I've always gotten nearly complete support. If you're absolutely sure you've eliminated all sources of gluten and you're still having symptoms, then something else is going on as well. Two things that come to mind are other food intolerances (dairy, corn) or the...
  7. All sound like classic celiac disease symptoms. When you combine positive blood tests, a parent who has it, and symptoms, you're talking about nearlry a 100 percent certainty he has celiac disease. Either ge the biopsy if you need more proof, or take him gluten-free and see if the symptoms resolve. richard
  8. I don't know about corn in hams. richard

    ARCHIVED Mouth Sores

Matt, The Irish have either the highest or one of the highest rates of celiac in the world. Celiac blood tests and biopsy are not infallible. I've read posts from any number of people with all the symptoms who had negative tests but got much better after going gluten-free. Has your wife had the blood tests? If not she should do that. She needs the Iga...
  10. With ham you're pretty much all right as long as you stay away from honeybaked or commercially glazed. The glaze always has wheat. I've used Kroger, Gwaltney, Thornapple Valley and Smithfield. richard
  11. I've made my own chicken broth. Some chicken, bones, old vegetable parts that I froze, instead of throwing away, onion, garlic, and various spices to taste. Salt, pepper, oregano, basil. Cook for a long time and then strain. Very tasty. I have not done beef broth but think the procedure would be similar. richard
  12. One thing I'd ask the doctor about if you haven't already is bacterial overgrowth. This is very frequently the cause of lack of improvement in people with celiac. Probiotics or antibiotics can knock it out. Some celiac experts automatically put every new celiac patient on probiotics because a fair percentage also have overgrowth. Overgrowth can also block...
  13. Children younger than yours get biopsies all the time. I support your decision not to have it done, but I've heard of kids as young as 2 having biopsies. richard
  14. I haven't had them but I've heard good things about their brownies and blondies. richard
  15. Progresso mushroom soup is gluten-free, or was last time I looked. It is not a concentrate so is not as thick as Campbell. But you could thicken it. richard
  16. Wheat-fed animals are not a problem. The gluten does not become a part of the meat. This has been addressed by numerous scientists (including some veterinary reseachers here at the university where I work). If it did somehow become a part of the meat, all of us celiacs would be getting ill from meat all the time. richard
  17. Lipton onion soup mix is gluten-free. In addition, Lipton is a Unilever company. Unilever's policy is to always clearly list in any gluten in the ingredients. In other words, wheat or barley won't be hidden in something like natural flavors. richard
  18. Gluten Free Pantry brownie mix. richard
  19. If your child has celiac disease, all the experts recommend strict adherence. Some people probably do react more than others, but science truly has no idea how much causes damage. And watching for obvious reactions doesn't necessarily tell if something is going wrong inside (silent damage). Your child will make enough mistakes and get enough through accidental...
  20. Brach's says it doesn't consider any of its candies gluten-free. The reality is that most of their candies probably ARE gluten-free, but they're either too lazy or too afraid of lawsuits to find out which ones. Candy corn is one of their candies I probably wouldn't be afraid to eat, but I refuse to give them any of my money. richard
  21. I had a Whopper without the bun a couple of months ago and they didn't charge more. richard
  22. "But you don't "Just get" Celiac Disease when you're in your late 50's. " Why not? You "just get" other autoimmune diseases at that age. Why not celiac? richard
  23. Celestial Seasons is a company that will clearly list any gluten. Usually the problem in tea is barley, which is usually listed. I know that Mom22 was told at a celiac meeting that the glue in teabags has gluten but I think this is an old celiac urban legend (was this a CSA group?). I can tell you for certain that not ALL teabags with glue have gluten...
  24. I don't have a bracelet because, like another poster, I don't want anybody to hesitate to use something that might save my life (I also don't have any other allergies or conditions). In those situations they'd probably be giving you something IV or an injection anyway, and injections and IVs don't contain gluten. If your child is in a situation where a pill...
  25. For those of you questioning whether having celiac disease puts us in the high-risk category for flu shots, the celiac center at Columbia says no. But it does suggest you get the pneumonia shot. FLU AND PNEUMOVAX IMMUNIZATION "Patients with celiac disease who are doing well on the diet are not at any increased risk to suffer untoward effects with the...
