  1. I'm on another forum with a guy who has celiac disease and is in the Army. He says that if you're diagnosed before joining they will not accept you. He was already in and is trying to hang on until retirement. Having celiac disease and being in the field with your unit would be nearly impossible. Going somewhere like Iraq or into combat would be completely...
  2. DH can actually come and go. My father had it for years and years. Then it just went away for several years, only to return. This was all before we knew the DH-celiac disease connection. richard
  3. The only M&Ms to avoid are the crispy ones. Scharffen Berger chocolate is gluten-free and dairy free although they warn that some products wrapped off-site have a slight chance of trace dairy. www.scharffenberger.com

    ARCHIVED Help

Go to celiac.com that describe what celiac is and how to treat it. That would give you a start. richard
  5. I don't know about the eye problem, but let me tell you that as a long-time DH (not HD) sufferer, the rash you have sounds exactly like DH. You need to see a dermatolgist when you have active blisters with fluid in them. If he diagnoses DH then you need to go gluten free because you either have or will have celiac disease. You might take dapsone for a while...
  6. I'm sure there are some excellent places in Atlanta for eating gluten-free, but you can't just say "I make gluten-free stuff" and they put you on the Westchester list. It's a lot more complicated than that. To be listed on the Westchester site, the restaurant has to agree to bascially put its employees thorugh training to cook gluten-free and to avoid...
  7. I was just in the store and the Kraft Lite mayo looks safe for us. Kraft says it will clearly list gluten and there was no wheat or barley anywhere in sight. HOWEVER, if the jar was already open somebody might have already contaminated it making a sandwich. richard
  8. Xanthan gum helps hold your baking efforts together. I find at my local health foods store. You can also order it online at one of the gluten-free places. richard
  9. Butter is without question gluten-free. Can anybody here name a magarine that has gluten? I've never found one. richard
  10. Yeast is gluten-free. And many root beers are gluten-free. richard
  11. If you're breaking out using Coppertone it's because of something other than gluten. I just read on another forum that ALL Coppertone products are gluten-free except the Endless Summer Tanning lotion. richard
  12. Definitely get rid of the malt flavoring but the vast majority of modified food starch is from something other than wheat and therefore gluten-free. When you see MFS as an ingredient, you have to check with the manufacturer before you eat it. There's no question that untreated or partially treated can lead to depression and other brain problems so it may...
  13. Kraft clearly lists any gluten, even if it's incidental gluten. All you have to do is read the ingredients. Most shredded cheeses are indeed safe but there are a couple that aren't. With other companies, you have to call and ask. richard
  14. I think Bayer makes them. Call the company and ask. richard
  15. What processed meats are you talking about? Deli meat? If so, virtually every deli meat is gluten-free. You have to question the company, but at least in the U.S. very, very few have gluten. For instance in the U.S., every prepackaged meat by Hillshire Farm, Carl Buddig and Sara Lee is gluten-free (some Sara Lee meats that you have sliced at the counter DO...
  16. I dealt with DH for more than 20 years and a painful rash on your hands with use of lotion does NOT sound like DH. DH is itchy but not painful (at least in my case), and the hands are not a place where you usually get it, except sometimes on the back of the fingers. Elbows, knees, buttocks and sometimes the scalp are the most commopn places for DH. Does he...
  17. Every meringue cookie I've seen has been gluten-free but that's not a guarantee that every one in the world is. richard
  18. This doesn't sound much like the DH I had. First, the stomach is not a common place to get DH. Second, everybody I know who has DH says it itches like crazy -- I once heard iot described as the equivalent of something like playing poison ivy and then rolling in a wool blanket filled with red ants. That's about right. My DH never got dry and flaky; instead...
  19. This is not one that would concern me from a gluten aspect. Many, many people get itchy or develop a rash from grass. It's a very common allergy. Some people can't mow the grass at all or have to wear a mask. richard
  20. Your doctor needs more modern information. Less than 50 percent of people with celiac disease have diarrhea. I didn't have it but my blood tests were sky-high and all of my villi were completely flattened. Classic case of celiac without most of the classic symptoms. Failure to thrive and weight loss, however, are major symptoms in children. What is JRA...
  21. A few topics in one post. Not all malt flavoring has gluten but it usually does. I ALWAYS assume it's made from barley, but in fact you can malt any grain. I can't remember the product, but recently somebody on another forum picked up a product that said "gluten free" and was appalled to see malt flavoring listed. She was getting ready to blast the company...
  22. Biopsy is considered the gold standard. If she had diabetes and the blood work in positive, she certainly has it, but if you wan the full workup, do it now before she goes gluten-free. You might know this, but she also needs to eliminate barley, rye, and oats (because oats are contaminated with wheat). richard
  23. Everybody should read this stuff. The NIH conference could be the biggest and best thing for us ever. Many, many more medical people will learn more about celiac disease because of this. And if more people are diagnosed as a result, then the commercial world will pay more attention to our needs. richard
  24. More veined cheese info: Here's what Outback says about the blue cheese they use: > The mold for our Blue is not cultured on bread or rye. This was > a process that was used many years ago. The mold is produced in > a product called AGA, this is a product that when heated becomes > a liquid and mold is formed and then is cooled down...
  25. I'm not sure where it is now but I'll try to look it up (I have to leave for the dentist in a minute). I don't keep it around because I thought it was generally understood that we do not have to avoid all veined cheeses. I CAN tell you that Cynthia Kupper of GIG says Outback blue cheese dressing is gluten-free. Marie's says it's blue cheese dressing is...
