ARCHIVED Lemonade
lovegrov replied to Carriefaith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can't quote you the exact rules but if wheat is some major ingredient they can't just not list it. And I seriously doubt these companies will tell you something is gluten-free when they know it isn't. When I call a company I call to ask if it has wheat, rye, barely or oats anywhere in it. I don't ask specifically about the source of the MFS or natural flavor... -
ARCHIVED Malibu Rum
lovegrov replied to chuot's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Other than some root beers, I can't think of a soft drink that isn't gluten-free. richard -
The stuff below was posted at St. John's a while back. I have not been to any of these places personally. Vegetarian is tougher because broiled or boiled seafood is always a good bet. "Daily Menu Natural Food store at Mile post 6 in Kill Devil Hills. North Croatan Highway Others have recommended Black Pelican, Lone Cedar Inn near bridge in Manteo...

ARCHIVED 3 Yr Old/endoscopy?
lovegrov replied to karen149's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you want the 100 percent for sure diagnosis the endoscopy is the only way to go. There are risks any time you have a procedure or take a medication, but the risks are very small for this. Your child won't remember anything. richard -
ARCHIVED Lemonade
lovegrov replied to Carriefaith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm not sure what you're asking, Carol. Maybe if you ask it a different way? richard -
ARCHIVED Heinz GF List
lovegrov replied to Carriefaith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It appears to me we have two different lists, one for the U.S. and one for Canada. I know that some of the items on the Canadian list aren't even sold in the U.S., or at least not in my part of the U.S. richard -
ARCHIVED Lemonade
lovegrov replied to Carriefaith's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Carol, Some companies do indeed hide ingredients. Some things like modified food starch and natural flavors can be wheat-based without listing it (usually they aren't but they can be). You have to educate yourself (look at celiac.com for the safe and forbidden ingredient lists) and you have to call companies about specific products. richard -
ARCHIVED Corn Flakes
lovegrov replied to catfish's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Malt flavoring can be made from a variety of sources but in cereal it's always made from barley, which means it is not gluten-free. Corn Flakes, Crispix, Rice Krispies and similar cereals all have gluten from malt. Any time you see malt or malt flavoring you have to assume it comes from barley. However, you can call the manufacturer and check. I can't... -
ARCHIVED Mono Diglycerides
lovegrov replied to mdixon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This should not be a concern in ice cream. If you contact Friendly's, they have a list of their gluten-free ice creams. Breyers and Blue Bunny clearly list any gluten. Baskin Robbins clearly lists wheat. Edy's and Turkeyhill have gluten-free lists. I don't eat ice cream without checking (with the exception of vanilla, never have seen a vanilla ice cream... -
ARCHIVED Hi I Am New With Alot Of Questions
lovegrov replied to AmyandSabastian's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Amy, Your doctor was actually right to refuse to test your child. Everything I've ever read says the blood tests are not accurate until 18-24 months. Some doctors even say 30 months. richard -
ARCHIVED International House Of Pancakes
lovegrov replied to dianne's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The beef at McDonalds is perfectly safe as is the grilled chicken. There are also several breakfast items. Here's their gluten-free list. Open Original Shared Link richard -
ARCHIVED Regular Sugar?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All Domino sugar is fine. All sugar I've ever checked has been fine. I don't even check sugar any more. Years ago CSA told people that brown sugar could have gluten but that appears to be nothing more than a celiac urban myth. richard -
ARCHIVED Anyone Else Have A B12 & Iron Deficiency?
lovegrov replied to californiagirl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Both of these deficiencies are QUITE common in people with untreated celiac because you haven't been absorbing things. It's very important to get both back up. richard -
ARCHIVED Precautions Before Surgery?
lovegrov replied to toujours40's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I heard the pharmacist who put together the glutenfreedrugs.com site (which sadly is out of date now) talk and he said 1) IV drugs simply do not have gluten and 2) Even if they did it would be a problem. I've never heard of anybody who thought they were glutened by an IV. richard -
ARCHIVED Microwave Popcorn?
lovegrov replied to Boojca's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Paul Newman popcorn is gluten-free. richard -
ARCHIVED Hamburgers
lovegrov replied to ck552's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I knew there was a reason not to shop at Walmart. Are you sure this 8-15 percent was in ground beef? I expect to pay for ground beef. And fillers in ground beef? That doesn't surpise me at a restaurant to help hold the patty together or in meatloaf, but not in store beef. The beef I usually buy at Kroger says 100 percent beef. Nothing else. Man I'm glad I... -
ARCHIVED Can You Tell What Had Gluten By Time Frame?
lovegrov replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
People react anywhere from 1 hour to 48 hours. In this case, though, it was without question the restaurant. I've never, ever found a hard block cheese that has gluten and most certainly never a cheddar. In fact, I never even check on block cheeses any more. Restaurants, on the other hand, are always a gamble, even the best ones. richard -
ARCHIVED Sick From Touching A Cookie?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Even if you could absorb gluten through your skin (which the experts say you cannot do), you most certainly could not absorb cookie crumbs. Not only are your pores too small, but the next level of skin below simply would not allow the crumbs to pass. It's a physical impossibility. richard -
ARCHIVED Deli Meats?
lovegrov replied to cynicaltomorrow's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Are you talking deli meats you buy in packages or the ones they slice at the counter. The vast majority of both are gluten-free, although not all. Some of Sara Lee's that are sliced at the counter are not (you'd have to contact Sara Lee to find out which ones aren't). All Boar's Head except a couple are gluten-free. With Oscar Meyer, just read the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Sick From Touching A Cookie?
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You cannot absorb gluten through your skin. The molecules are too large. Either you didn't wash your hands well enough or you put your fingers to your mouth without realizing it. This is very easy to do. richard -
ARCHIVED Hamburgers
lovegrov replied to ck552's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have yet to find a store ground beef that is anything except 100 percent beef. richard -
ARCHIVED Gf Household Products?...
lovegrov replied to Donna F's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last time I checked Cascade was gluten-free. I try to get gluten-free household products just because of the chance of getting some in my mouth accidentally. I do have DH but gluten products on my skin do not cause the DH to flare. Most experts think you have to swallow the gluten even for DH. richard -
ARCHIVED Bayer 81 Mg Chewable Aspirin
lovegrov replied to kerri124's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As far as I can tell, that glutenfreedrugs.com list has not been updated in a long, long time. I know it lists Tums as gluten-free and Tums, last time I checked, flat out said Tums is not gluten-free. Last time I checked with Bayer they did the CYA routine -- we don't use ingredients with gluten but we can't guarantee our suppliers. -
ARCHIVED Preservative For Gluten-free Bread
lovegrov replied to benzi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm amazed to see another thread where somebody thinks all white or distilled voneagr is off limits. Once again, almost all distilled vinegar is made from something other than wheat, and even if it is made from wheat, distilling makes it gluten-free. -
The fact is you can go to the web sites for a large number of fast-food restaurants and find either a gluten-free list, an allergen list, or an exhaustive list of all ingredients for each item. Contamination is still a major problem at these places, though. richard
