ARCHIVED This Information Might Be Helpful
lovegrov replied to neff-terence's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have yet to find a baking soda, cinammon or vanilla extract that's not gluten-free. Baking soda is always gluten-free. Some people have suggested in the past that some manufacturers might put flour in spices to make them flow better but I have yet to find anybody who does this with pure spices. Some spice mixes MIGHT have flour in them but even that seems... -

I'm not sure what else you can do except listen to what others say. I don't buy Lay's becuase I've heard of so many people who have had problems with their products. The only other thing you can do is avoid processed products as much as possible and never eat out. Something like 20 percent of processed products that a manufacturer thinks are gluten-free... -
ARCHIVED Advice On Celiac Diagnosis
lovegrov replied to tommy1976's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have heard of people who had nothing but a positive Igg who went gluten-free and that solved everything. How bad do you feel and how much do you want to feel better? Going gluten-free without knowing if that's really the problem seems radical, but if your doctors are at a complete dead end, what they're doing isn't helping, and you aren't functioning... -

Thanks for the info but if you heard that all McCormick spices or products are gluten-free then somebody told you wrong. What McCormick does say is that they'll clearly list gluten if it's present. And it is present in some of their spice mixes or marinades. I know numerous people with celiac who use many McCormick products -- particularly their pure spices... -
ARCHIVED Will Catscan Show Celiac?
lovegrov replied to Susan555's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Sorry, but the CT cannot show celiac. You must have the endoscopy with biopsy. Both the endoscopy and colonoscopy are a breeze. The colonoscopy prep the night before isn't a barrel of laughs, but for people who have suffered through years of diarrhea and worse, it's not so bad. For the actual procedure you will be sedated and also given an amnesiac. I... -
ARCHIVED Weight Gain After Becoming Gf
lovegrov replied to nurse diesel's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Take a lesson from me. Before going gluten-free I ate everything in sight and never gained. In fact, I was on the lower end of the ideal weight range for me. When I got really sick I quickly lost 20. After going gluten-free I kept eating large amounts and not exercising. I gained back the 20 and another 50!! I now watch portions, do weights 2-3 times a week... -
ARCHIVED Biopsy Results Question
lovegrov replied to Mom22's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In my opinion, for what it's worth, three positive tests and any damage to the villi means celiac. In fact, I seem to remember that three positive tests equals better than a 98 or 99 percent chance it's celiac disease. All the biopsy means is the damage isn't bad enough to flatten all the villi -- at least not yet. good luck -
ARCHIVED Anyone Know What Causes This?
lovegrov replied to bscarter46's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If Beverly or anybody else has untreated celiac disease, the reason for reading things over and over is not ADD (although I guess you could have that, too) but because you're malabsorbing vital nutrients that you need for everything from walking to thinking. You have brain fog, a very common symptom of celiac. IF you have celiac, this will not ever clear... -
ARCHIVED Stressed And New To Celiac
lovegrov replied to armymomx4's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I know nothing about polyglandular so cannot say how that might still be affecting your daughter. You don't say how long she's been gluten-free but people who have been really, really sick take a while to respond. I was in the hospital 11 days and missed 10 weeks of work, all because of celiac. I also had the chills (and night sweats), which is a somewhat... -
ARCHIVED Exact Details Of Endocscopic Biopsy
lovegrov replied to tendyourspirit's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't think I have all the details you need but I DO know that he needs to take something 8-10 samples from various areas of the small bowel. Damage can be spotty and if you take just 2 or 3 samples you can miss it. If he doesn't know what he's looking for he needs to let somebody with more expertise read the slides. richard -
ARCHIVED Foods, Shampoos, And Other No-no's
lovegrov replied to celiac3270's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I never stopped eating dairy and never had a problem. Until you start getting this straighter in your head, stick with basic meat, veggies, fruit, eggs, cheese. That's what I did. And believe me, it becomes much easier to deal with. I don't even haul around lists any more. richard -
ARCHIVED 12 Month Old With Possible Celiac
lovegrov replied to Kindness's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It sounds like something's going on with wheat, but the blood tests might not prove it. If she had been off gluten for very long the tests might not be accurate. I also think I've heard that it's hard to get an accurate diagnosis on anybody younger than 18-24 months -- something to do with the antibodies in somebody that young. If the tests come back negative... -
ARCHIVED From Failure To Thrive To Thriving?
lovegrov replied to atristin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can't give you a personal success story because my children don't have celiac disease, but I can tell you that in nearly three years of reading about celiac disease on the Internet, I've NEVER seen a story of child who has celiac disease who didn't respond to the diet. It doesn't happen the second you go gluten-free, but she'll be growing soon. Once she... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free
lovegrov replied to emmeeann's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Not sure how long you've been gluten-free but if it's only for a month it will take more time. You will feel hungry a lot because now you actually feel like eating and your body is craving the nutrients you weren't getting. My doctor had me eating lots of protein -- think meat -- with every meal. I had dropped from 155 to 135. Because I kept pigging out and... -
If you're actually swelling up it sounds like you might also be allergic to wheat. richard

ARCHIVED First Time Out To Eat Since Diagnosis
lovegrov replied to kerri124's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I also liked the rolls I got in Disney World (at Akershus, but I assume they use the same brand everywhere there), but I wasn't too thrilled with the bun I had with my chicken sandwich. I also had a very yummy brownie at Hollywood and Vine and very fine pancakes at one of the character breakfasts. I really wanted French toast but they were out of gluten-free... -
I've personally given up on Red Lobster and just eat at other seafood restaurants. If you do go, I've heard in the past that the seasoning they use for vegetables and some of the seafood definitely had gluten. richard

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer
lovegrov replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Gluten free to me means completely free of gluten, not "our beer has gluten but it falls below some arbitrary line." Also, when they talk about being below a certain level, I guess they're talking about some European standard, where it's my understanding they are indeed allowed to have a certain amount of gluten and still be considered gluten-free. The U... -
ARCHIVED First Time Out To Eat Since Diagnosis
lovegrov replied to kerri124's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
A few comments. Somebody said McDonald's was the noly place with a dedicated fryer, yet every single Wendy's I've ever checked also has a dedicated fryer. And every Burger King. The problem is that even at places with dedicated fryers, accidents happen. PF Chang's and Outback are the most prominent and well-know places with a gluten-free menu (and the... -
ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed, Have Questions
lovegrov replied to Karina's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
This is not at all unusual. I've heard from any number of people who had symptoms as a child and then went into "remission" when they hit puberty, only to have it return with a vengeance. I look back and am certain that I was anemic as a child and almost certainly had celiac disease then. richard -
ARCHIVED Just Joined And, Guess!, Have Questions
lovegrov replied to kaylee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you can't put him back on gluten because of the terrible reactions, there might not be much more you can do from a testing standpoint. For an accurate test, he has to be eating gluten. If he has an allergy, it's possible he can outgrow that. But if it's celiac, it's celiac for life. Some people do indeed seem to go into remission as teenagers but it... -

ARCHIVED Does This Sound Like Celiac Disease?
lovegrov replied to Mommyto2too's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
This doesn't sound much like celiac to me. It does, however, sound a lot like the rare attacks I get that the doctors THINK are esophageal spasms. The pain starts in front just below or around the end of my breastbone and spreads to my back. The pain is excruciating and at its worst makes it hard for me to breathe. Does this sound like what you're having... -
ARCHIVED Watching Diet And Still Getting Sick
lovegrov replied to Aightball's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Corn Pops and Ruffles are two bad things to be eating when you're trying to heal. Lays has a notorious problem with cross contamination and the old Corn Pops is the same. Go back to plain, good, unprocessed food for a while. And eat a more balanced diet. As for chicken, I can understand if people don't want some of the added sodium, but the flavor enhancers... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer

Amstel Light mght not have wheat (a lot of beers don't) but I think it's a good bet it has barley. It's not gluten-free.
