ARCHIVED Starbucks
lovegrov replied to lisabarella's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Last time I saw a post on this only one drink at Starbucks wasn't gluten-free. The expresso and regular coffees were definitely gluten-free. I think it was one of the flavored frappucinos (sp?) that wasn't. You can also get in touch with Starbucks and ask them. -
I'm not sure how to break this to you but fresh food also gets bugs and bug parts. I'm not too keen on rat dung but a few bug parts won't do you any harm. richard

ARCHIVED Charcoal-for Bbqing
lovegrov replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You don't have to give up charcoal completely. Find a hardware or kitchen store that sells natural charcoal. This is charred wood with no starch, fillers, or chemicals. It burns and tastes better. richard -
ARCHIVED Vaccinations and Autoimmune Disorders
lovegrov replied to taneil's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
We did lots of research and my wife is a nurse -- and we decided with ease to vaccinate both of our children. As to smallpox, they stopped vaccinating because the disease was eradicated worldwide not because of reactions (yes, there were reactions, I know that). This eradication saved untold lives (death rate for the severe form was 20-30 percent) and... -
Ooops, didn't see this post earlier. Yes, the low-carb chicken breat is the same as their charbroiled chicken breast on a bun. At their web site in the food ingredients it plainly says the glaze contians soy sauce with wheat. That's why it's not gluten-free. richard

ARCHIVED Lipton Brisk Ice Tea
lovegrov replied to Thomas's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Lipton is a Unilever company and last time I checked Unilever says it will clearly list any gluten in the ingredients of its products. This is what the person you spoke to was saying. Perhaps Brisk is somehow contaminated -- or perhpas you are having a ahrd time with the high fructose corn syrup in it -- but it isn't supposed to have gluten. BTW, virtually... -
ARCHIVED Vaccinations and Autoimmune Disorders
lovegrov replied to taneil's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm not going to get into a protracted vaccine discussion either, but I must take issue with the assertion that it takes just as much faith to have your child vaccinated as it does to not do it. It seems to me there's little question that the benefits far outweigh any of these suppsoed risks. Look at what vaccines have done to smallpox and polio, both of... -
ARCHIVED Do I Need More Testing?
lovegrov replied to monica's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Most experts consider gluten sensitivity or intolerance merely the early form of full-blown celiac. You can go for the endoscopy and see where you are but if you continue eating gluten you're probably taking big risks. Are you having any sort of symptoms? richard -
You probably got a little contamination. I'd avoid eating out a for a little while. After that, you need to develop a relationship with some local owners. Talk to them in detail about what's needed and see if they'll cooperate. You're not back to zero on healing, just a setback.

ARCHIVED You've Probably Heard It All Before
lovegrov replied to YankeeFan's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Go to the Hormel web site and click on the FAQ. Somehwere in there they have a whole gluten-free list that includes many, many already cooked items. I love the pork and beef au jus in the cooking bags. Yes, both are gluten-free. Tyson already cooked whole chickens and chicken legs are gluten-free. For anything that Kraft makes all you have to do is... -
ARCHIVED Kids With Headaches?
lovegrov replied to Ruth's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I remember having many headaches as a child and although I was normal size and didn't have diarrhea, I can look back now and see I had celiac disease then. I also had headaches every day as an adult until I went gluten-free. richard -
ARCHIVED Vaccinations and Autoimmune Disorders
lovegrov replied to taneil's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I can't send you to a source but it's always been my understanding that babies this young are too little to produce the antibodies involved in celiac. It seems more likely you're looking at possible allergy here. That's not to say you shouldn't look at celiac in the future. You should. I wouldn't even consider not getting my children vaccinated. richard -
ARCHIVED Gf Coolers For Summer!
lovegrov replied to foxyfire24's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was going to stay out of this one but... According to a number of researchers, the U.S. and Canadian dietician associations, and a number of distilleries, the distilling proces for liquor and vinegar takes out the gluten or gliaden, rendering anything distilled safe as long as gluten isn't added back in after distilling (I haven't found this to be a... -
ARCHIVED International House Of Pancakes
lovegrov replied to dianne's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
The Waffle House I went to used gluten-free Hormel bacon, although I can't guarantee they all use this. Truth is, I've heard of only two bacons that aren't gluten-free, although one of them is the bacon at McDonald's. Don't know about the hash browns but you can ask. The sausage is also very likely gluten-free but you should also check on that. I had the... -
ARCHIVED International House Of Pancakes
lovegrov replied to dianne's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I once had somebody at corporate connfirm there's panckae abtter in the omelets. I haven't checked with them lately, but at the time they said you could order an egg white omelet or an egg substitute omelet. Neither would have pancake batter. I actually eat the omelets at Waffle House. The omelet pans are not used for pancakes and are nowhere near the... -
ARCHIVED New And Soooo Overwhelmed
lovegrov replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Last I looked the gluten-free drug list was outdated and included at least a couple that company says have gluten, like Tums. richard -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Spices?
lovegrov replied to goddess's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If McCormick says it doesn't have gluten I'd most certainly believe them over whatever list it is that you have. richard -
ARCHIVED New 'safe' Food List,
lovegrov replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I just clicked and had no problem. You do get a blank web page but your computer should also download a PDF file. Do you have Acrobat Reader? You have to have that. richard -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Most Common Symptoms?
lovegrov replied to Chantalle's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are tons of different symptoms. While we hear and talk a lot about the diarrhea, the most common one for adults is fatigue. I never had the diarrhea myself but was severely anemic. richard -
ARCHIVED Modified Corn Starch
lovegrov replied to Elizabeth's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'll have to agree with Kim on this one. Modified corn starch is gluten-free. It is NOT a suspect ingredient. richard -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Spices?
lovegrov replied to goddess's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Spices in foods and spice blends are red flags that you have to check on. But as already said regular single spices are pretty much without exception gluten-free. And with McCormick, you can tell if their blends have gluten just by reading the ingredients. richard -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed And Confused
lovegrov replied to daydrmer03's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There's so much for you to know. To me, a positive biopsy means you absolutely have celiac. The bloodwork is negative because you've been gluten-free for two months. Once you have celiac, you have it for life. Distilled vinegar, according to most scientists and dieticians associations, is actually always gluten-free because of the distilling process. Some... -
Drinking alcohol close to bedtime can cause urination at night. Diabetes can cause frequent unrination so if he hasn't been checked for that he should be, particularly if he's overweight and/or inactive. In my view, no matter what the beer companies say, beer is not gluten-free. It might be very low in gluten, but to me gluten-free means no gluten. richard

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Beer
lovegrov replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Same message as before. What does below the gluten-free level mean? There is no such beast in the U.S. In Canada, if I'm not mistake, the gluten-free level is 0 -- as in none. There's obviously some gluten, although I don't doubt it's very small. cheers richard, roanoke, va. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Negative Results
lovegrov replied to trcrampton's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would pretty much agree with the first answer you got. If your child has it one of you has the gene. There are, however, people who have the gene and are not sick with celiac. I can't name one right off the bat, but there are other diseases or conditions where this is also true. People are gene carriers but not necessarily sick. Many celiac experts think...
