Hi everyone, I'm very sad to report the demise of a potentially wonderful loaf of bread. It kind of made a hard, dirt, crust thing. I stirred the yeast in the hot water as it was supposed to be frothing... but there was no froth...and I wanted it to froth...any sign of life from that freakin' yeast and I would have left it alone. Instead...

ARCHIVED Quick Update On My Boy
imsohungry posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi everyone. Well, we took Eli to the allergist, and he is allergic to cats, dogs, and dust mites. I pressed the allergist to please request bloodwork for food allergies as well, and he agreed that with Eli's weight and eating/feeding issues, it would be a good idea to get him tested (a proactive approach)...I like this doctor! So today, we took... -
ARCHIVED Maybe It's Just Me...
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Wow! I think that in this internet savy world we live in now, it is easy to be lured in by scams. You start to trust people you really don't know. And, while most people are honest, there are plenty of nutcases and perverts. It seems like it used to just be the naive and gullable that were good targets, but now, even computer "experts... -
ARCHIVED You Know You're A Celiac If.......
imsohungry replied to irish daveyboy's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
You know you have celiac if... 1. You have ever had to make the decision whether to buy a loaf of gluten-free bread for yourself or a roast to feed your whole family. (After all, they cost about the same)! 2. While leaving a public restroom, you have ever blamed your BM on another woman. (I think it's that lady in the end stall) ... -

imsohungry replied to Willow5's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Mary and Linda! Welcome to the boards...sorry I can't answer your questions, I don't own a Bosch. But I thought I would welcome you! Happy baking. -Julie -
ARCHIVED Excellent Appetizer
imsohungry replied to IMWalt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Please pardon my ignorance...but what is prosciutto? (Obviously it's a ham of some sort because you stated so; I've just never heard of it). But I like plums and it sounds simple to make. Thanks! -Julie -
ARCHIVED First Try At Bob's Potato Quick Bread
imsohungry replied to home-based-mom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ah Colleen, but some of the most obvious things are the easiest slip-ups! Riceguy, good point. I usually place my bread in a microwave with a cup of very hot water. It rises faster this way due to the air-tight seal and mild heat circulating. Come on Sandi, you can do it! -Julie -
ARCHIVED I Am Totally Excited
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Morning everyone! Wonka- "Having good equipment just makes the job easier"- You are sooo right! Since all of my old pans have warped, my food no longer cooks evenly...and soft baked things "run" into one another! Hello Collette darling- As always, your wisdom is appreciated. I take what the cooking Goddess says (that would be... -
ARCHIVED Need Help: I'm Looking For...
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Thanks, you both have excellent ideas! I've never used Ebay before...don't laugh...I think I'm the only person in the U.S. who has never purchased an item off Ebay. But it can't hurt to browse...and possibly buy. The idea about looking in small consignment shops really may be the answer. I can think of one that is in-town, and I could probably... -

ARCHIVED Need Help: I'm Looking For...
imsohungry posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
O.K., so I want to use roosters to decorate my kitchen. However, I want to use them sparingly (i.e. no rooster wallpaper and curtains, etc.). And I want the roosters to look "classy"...not dollar store roosters. Anybody have any ideas? I checked Home Interiors, but they are not selling decorative roosters right now, I also went in Kirklands (southern... -
ARCHIVED Any Good Books Lately?
imsohungry replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I tend to read a lot of nonfiction books... Self-help books (psychological, physical, cleaning, baking, raising children, etc.) and psychology based books that most would find boring (eleven years of college drilled that into me) A good book (if you want to realize how blessed you and your family are) is "A Child Called It." The book is part... -

ARCHIVED I Am Totally Excited
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yep Julie, Being in the right place at the right time is the key...ironically, I wasn't even in there for cookware! I was looking for kitchen roosters for decorating! Yeaaa Sandi...proudly made in the US of A! Don't get me wrong, Walmart does have some good dishes and cookware. But I've always purchased the "three baking pans for $6.00" kind... -
ARCHIVED True Southern Biscuits
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Yep, Rachelle...that's me too. I've tried what seems like EVERYTHING. My poor husband is usually my test subject; he's eaten some mighty gross things for the sake of biscuit perfection. Well, if you, or anyone else reading this, stumbles upon a southern biscuit recipe...let me know! (and I'll do the same for you)! hugs. happy baking. -Julie -
ARCHIVED I Am Totally Excited
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I'm still so excited I can hardly stand it... 11 pots/pans and a food chopper made by Cuisanart/Wilton A cheese/veggie Grater and general "house decorating junk" My total was under $100 before tax. The stuff was so heavy, I couldn't lift one of the bags...my hubby had to carry it to the car! Talk about Christmas in July! You ladies... -
O.k. I'll admit that "normal" depends on the social norms of your culture and location. But I've gotta say that there are some really scary folks on these Buy/Sell sites. I mean bizzare beyond any social norm. I spoke with one such person yesterday on the phone. I am willing to help those in need; My family says that I am overly kind, but...

I have got to share this...for all of us who bake in this forum; I think you can appreciate this sale I found! I was in a discount/overstock department store shopping yesterday, and they had received a shipment of very high-end pots and pans. I purchased 2 new square cake pans, 2 new bread loaf pans, one new baking sheet, and a food chopper all...

I've posted a similar topic years ago, but so many new people have joined since then, I would like to see if I get any new input. I want to make salmon "patties" (in no way kin to cow patties) And I usually eat stewed tomatoes and rice as a side dish (this is VERY good for those who have never had it...makes a great side dish for fish...I'll be glad...

ARCHIVED Daughter Going Gluten Free Tomorrow
imsohungry replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
If I were you, I would get a gallon/gallon 1/2 ziploc bag and place all your utensils in there. Perhaps you could ask your roommates if you can have one cabnit to yourself in the kitchen? If not, I know of many people in your situation who simply buy a flat under-the-bed box and store all of their kitchen items in there. Hope this helps. -Julie -
ARCHIVED Daughter Going Gluten Free Tomorrow
imsohungry replied to strawberrygm's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thought I share my info. I didn't replace my metal spatula, etc. But I did drop by the dollar store and spend about five dollars on a new plastic cutting board and plastic spatula and a few other cheap kitchen items that the dollar store carries. Just an idea. -Julie -
ARCHIVED Here's A Totally Random Question...
imsohungry replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hey Patti! Hypothetically speaking, if I only have sweetened applesauce, would the same principle still apply? Or would I need to reduce the sugar also? I may have to send the hubby to the store. I have different flavored packs of applesauce in the fridge, but many of them have added sugar...I'm almost positive. I wonder what would happen... -
As others have said...not overcooking your pasta, draining, and rinsing will help with the mushiness. If the pasta continues to stick, try adding 1/2 tsp oil or 1/4 tsp vinager while it boils/simmers. That should help it "unclump." Happy baking. -Julie

ARCHIVED Fudgy Brownies
imsohungry replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hi Rachelle Just for my own clarification...do you only use 2/3 the fat of what the recipe calls for, or do you reduce the fat by 2/3...in effect using only 1/3 of what the recipe calls for? I'm only asking because I had never considered reducing the fat. I learn something new every day! Thanks. Happy baking! -Julie
