Celiac.com 07/03/2019 - Ever thought about gluten-free insurance? Ads for a Canadian company called Apollo offer the first ever 100% gluten-free insurance policy. If you're thinking, "Great, it's about time someone created gluten-free insurance," then you might have missed the joke. Apollo's gluten-free insurance is not a policy for people who are gluten-free, it's a policy that contains no gluten. Get it?

The ads read: Apollo offers first ever 100% gluten-free insurance policy! Apollo claims that a "complete digitization of the entire insurance purchasing process" has left the policy 100% gluten-free. “There’s no gluten on the internet,” says Apollo CEO Jeff McCann. “By taking the insurance policy from its physical form, which is full of gluten, and translating it into a cloud-based digital form, Apollo is able to guarantee that there is no way gluten could possibly contaminate the policy.”

    Celiac.com Sponsor (A12):
Apollo adds that the company's policy was tested in a third party lab, which confirmed that there was no gluten whatsoever contained in the final product.

The ad ends with a claim that Apollo is now interested in partnering with Beyond Meat to offer a vegan insurance policy later on this year. Anyone curious or interested can contact:

Celiac.com 09/18/2009 - Little did the parents of 17-year-old Brianna Rice realize that her February diagnosis for celiac disease would make her into a poster child for insurance reform. That's because when Brianna was first diagnosed, she was covered by health insurance. Thanks to some extra scrutiny by her insurance company, that is no longer the case.

In the months following her diagnosis, Brianna's insurance company, American Community Mutual Insurance, took a microscope to her medical records and canceled her policy after it ruled that her parents had lied on her application last November.

American Community not only canceled her policy, effective in May, but also denied coverage all the way back to November 1st, 2008, the day Brianna's coverage began.

Ready for Whurple, the Purple Gluten-free Wheat Strain?
Celiac.com 05/20/2017 - Anyone eager to try Whurple, the purple strain of gluten-free wheat reported by the State Collegian, will have to wait quite a while.
It seems that the Collegian's report of the development by a Kansas State agriculture student was, in fact, merely a thinly disguised April Fool's Day joke. The Collegian had reported that such a product had been developed by one "Hayden Field, senior in agronomy," as part of his "four-year undergraduate research project in wheat development."
Aside from the note at the bottom of the article indicating the joke, a major clue can be found in the article itself, which states that the wheat strain, which Field named "Whurple," was "genetically modified to have the "Willie gene," which means the wheat will be resistant to the colors...

Agency and Party City Apologize for 'Gross' Gluten-Free pre-Super Bowl Ad
Celiac.com 02/20/2018 - Party City has pulled a controversial advertising spot that provoked outrage in gluten-free community by tagging gluten-free dieters as 'gross.'
Moreover, both Party City, and the advertising firm behind the pre-Super bowl ad, Hill Holliday, have issued public apologies in an effort to mitigate the outrage caused by its obviously insensitive ad.
The ad starred two women attending a Super Bowl party and standing in front of an "inflatable snack stadium."
When one of the women points out the gluten-free options, the other asks "Do we even know people that are like that?"
    The first woman answers: "Tina."
To which, the second woman says: "Oh, gross, yeah."
Perhaps unsurprisingly, furious viewers wasted no time in launching the Twitter hashtag #IAmTina...

Gluten-Free Diners Need a Sense of Humor at Luxury Dublin Restaurant
Celiac.com 06/27/2019 - A luxury hotel in Dublin has gleefully and publicly responded to a negative customer e-mail that criticized its cafe's snarky humor about gluten-free eaters.  The White Moose Café menu says that it will do whatever it can to accommodate those with an allergy to gluten, but encourages those with gluten intolerances to seek the help of “a good psychotherapist down the road.”
The hotel took a similar stance on vegans, telling diners that “vegans will not be shot dead at point blank range if they have the decency to give us 24 hours notice of their arrival."
A customer named Mary sent an email condemning the hotel's “derisive comments” about gluten-free diners. “You appear to be a bunch of buffoons with a very juvenile sense of humor,” she wrote, adding t...
