    Kobe Bryant Takes the Lakers Gluten-free

    Celiac.com 01/20/2014 - Word is out that Kobe Bryant is looking to help the Los Angeles Lakers shed weight with high protein, gluten-free, Paleo-style diet plan that is high in healthy fats.

    Photo: Wikimedia Commons--Keith AllisonIn an interview with the Healthy Home Economist, LA Lakers trainer Gary Vitti says that Kobe's diet is rich in grass-fed beef and free-range eggs, and that any food containing corn syrup or gluten is strictly forbidden.

    The article quotes Vitti as reciting the dangers of a low-fat diet, and saying that "Kobe is not following the USDA Food Pyramid – in fact, he’s following the inverse."

    Says Vitti, Kobe is focused on "getting traditional fats into his diet and the wrong fats out."

    The Lakers even have a name for their plan. It’s called PRO Nutrition, short for Performance, Recovery and Orthogenesis. The diet has many Laker players boasting of faster injury recovery, and less joint soreness than last season.

    While I appreciate the product development that comes from so many going gluten-free, I am very concerned about it being tied to fad diets such as Paleo. The two should be treated quite differently: One is a life-and-death situation for millions of people, while the other is yet another in a long line of scientifically unsupported lifestyle choices.

The two should be treated quite differently: One is a life-and-death situation for millions of people, while the other is yet another in a long line of scientifically unsupported lifestyle choices.

    You really should read the science behind the "Paleo diet" and whole foods movement. The low-fat diet, supported by the USDA for the last forty years, is the true fad diet.

    Celiac.com 08/17/2011 - Gluten-free eating is playing a key role in the diets of major A-list celebrities. Among them, Lady Gaga, Russell Crowe, and Jennifer Esposito all have made gluten-free eating a major part of their health and diet routines.
    Russell Crowe has reportedly dropped more than 16 pounds by following a strict exercise regime and eating a diet that is largely gluten-free.
    In mid-June, Crowe, 47, launched a 105 day plan to tone up and shed weight. He has made gluten-free food a major part of that effort and seems well on his way to dropping the 41-pounds he hopes to lose.

    Catholic Church Votes to Address Gluten-free Communion Issues
    Celiac.com 11/26/2014 - Catholics with celiac disease received some hopeful news recently, when the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops voted overwhelmingly in favor of drafting of a revision to the Guidelines for the Celebration of the Sacraments with Persons with Disabilities. The vote was 207 bishops in favor and one against, with one abstention.
    The bishops voted to change the guideline to accommodate people with celiac disease and others who cannot consume wheat, and have been unable to take full communion.
