Mongolian Bbq

Has anyone eaten successfully at Mongolian BBQ? I will be out of town this weekend and didn't want to eat PF Chang's for 3 meals :) I thought I would bring my own sauce, do the allergy/grill clean off?? Any experience?

Before gluten free I tried to eat at a Mongolian BBQ - I had them clean it off because I can't have tomatoes/peppers, etc, and I still got sick. When they cleaned it they basically just poured a bunch of water on it and scraped. It was like a giant cast iron skillet. With all the noodles and soy sauces, etc, I just wouldn't even chance it... :(

I miss it a lot! I can't seem to make anything taste like it either...

this topic came up on an online journaling site I use - someone who works at a mongolian restaurant was asked to cook something for someone with a wheat allergy. while this particular person's attitude was *complete* crap, in short, the answer was no. there's too much sharing of things, and "cleaning" is not the thorough sort of cleaning you'd need/want. sorry. :-( there are a lot of other options (check out the silly yak's restaurant list), in most places though. where are you going to be?

Well, I guess I will just be saying "NO" to Mongolian. I'll be in Columbus, OH at the Easton Mall. My mom and I go there a few times a year for shopping--fabulous mall there. They have a PF Chang's and a few other places. May just get a salad somewhere for lunch and do Chang's for dinner... There list of restaurants is here: Open Original Shared Link

I lived (and worked in Easton) for a few years back in the day.

I had success at a few places there.

You should be able to eat at the Ocean Club. Go to www.cameronmitchell.com and click on the Ocean Club restaurant. -- Cameron's places are pretty good and knowledgeable places -- the chefs are ALL ABOUT customer service. The head chef at the Ocean CLub is a guy named Jared -- I used to work with him at the Columbus Fish Market. Needless to say, he knows about Celiac Disease. I just made a call for you to him regarding a person with celiac disease coming in to the Ocean Club (once he calls me back, I will post his message for you). He used to make stuff for me all the time at The Fish Market, so hopefully he will be able to help you also.

Also, I used to work at Brio Tuscan Grill. I think the website is www.brioitalian.com -- try googling brio italian.

anyway, at Brio, you can eat the Caprese Salad (Buffalo Mozerella and Tomatoes), the carpaccio (no croutons), grilled asparagus, sauteed spinach, the chop salad and I think there is a salad with pulled chicken on it (not the Romano -- that is breaded) and the pork chops (the recipe may have changed --- avoid the mashed potatoes -- they have a dry mix in them), ---- they also have steaks (no onion straws and no roma breaded tomatoes) at dinner and a whole chicken dish that I think is gluten-free also....

For Sunday (and maybe Saturday) Brunch (at Brio), you can do a frittata (open face italian omlette with veggies and served with fruit) -- MAKE SURE YOU GET A CLEAN PAN!!!!!

Anyway, call them, I think the number is 614-416-4745 (I think) -- if you need questions answered, call between 2 and 4 in the afternoon and ask to speak to the Executive Chef (I rarely trust managers)....this is a good rule of thumb for any restaurant (calling between 2 and 4)

Lastly, I used to always eat at Restauarant Hama -- it is a sushi place in Easton. They used to have this burnout sushi chef from Huntington Beach that worked there. Anyway, he was easy to communicate with (as he was American and spoke English as his first language)...Sushi is always pretty good for us Celiacs anyway...

ok, just got off the phone with Jared (the executive chef at The Ocean Club).

He said that the chilean sea bass dish on the menu is definitely gluten-free.

From the website:

SEARED CHILEAN SEA BASS

roasted shallot gratin, wilted spinach, champagne truffle cream :P

Furthermore, if you don't like that, he can work with you regarding other items...like I said, give him a call between 2 and 4 and he will help you!

if you check the silly yak's restaurant guide, there are suggestions for gluten-free items at California Pizza Kitchen (such as the field greens salad, sauteed scallops, and steamed vegetables, but be careful of the dressings) and Cheesecake Factory (non-marinated meats and vegetables, and pancooked (not grilled) fish), besides the other options already mentioned.

I have found some wonderful places at Easton that are quite accomodating. They know when I say wheat allergy and bring me a gluten-free menue.

Try the Ocean Club. It is a Cameron Mitchell Resturant. It is a local chain. They have been accomodating at all of the restaurants in the chain. Mitchells, Martini's, Ocean Club, Cap City. I avoid places like the Cheesecake Factory. They are always to busy to accomodate me safely. If you leave the Easton area and venture through Columbus the Bonefish Grill also has a gluten-free menue. Hyde Park has some great menue items that are gluten-free. All of the places are a little pricey but aren't we worth it. If you go to any of the Cameron Mitchell restaurants and you enjoy "adult beverages" I highly recommend the PinFin Martini. Very yummy!

I am not so sure about this dish...I just ate there last night and was told it was the only dish on their menu I could eat. So I had that along with the house salad. At the time, I couldn't even finish the dish...it just didn't taste right although I couldn't put my finger on why...of couse I wanted to trust the folks at Cameron Mitchell of all places. Then I woke up at 2:30 with my classic symptoms...stomach cramping, diarrhea and this time even vomiting. I emailed them this morning for more info/clarification. Ironically, the last time I ate here I ate a dish that was also gluten-free and found a lone macaroni noodle sitting at the bottom of the dish when I was finished. I found it funny at the time, thankful of course that I hadn't eaten it.

Other than Ocean Club, I had a wonderful experience at Mitchell's Steakhouse a couple months ago....they were very accomidating and most of their menu items are already gluten free. The chef even made me a special batch of fresh potato chips to munch on instead of bread. So that was a good experience!

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

      Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

      After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!

      learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D  got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH   I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption
