I was told vitamin D gives you energy , so I went out and got some, at the moment all I could find was D3 so I got it. Good for my bones that always break. The more I read on it ,the more I found out it is really good for your bones. I got some lil caplets I guess you'd call them. They look like lil oil filled caplets , any hoo I found a lil health food store and they had B3 in liquid form. I bought it!! Now I am wondering if it is tru I should find Vitamins and Minerals in liquid form? Only because my friend told me because I am celiac I won't absorb any vitamins. I do think I absorb some. They are just low. She told me that she read I may as well flush pill form vitamins in the toilet. I think if that is the case why do I take any pills? High BP pills? Fish oil pills? All the stuff I am taking.. Why ? If it is not in liquid form or sub lingual form ...Will I still absorb it?

Yes, I do absorb capsules, anyway.  I have been striving to get rid of capsules for supplements.  My nutrient absorption was poor last November, yet my nutrient levels rose to good levels by June.  For each test, November and June, I took the same vitamin capsuled supplements.  Something was getting in.  My supplements were professional products and were made to be really easy to digest.

Still, I thought liquid supplements were what I would want.  It seemed a sure way to make them easy to absorb.  I searched high and low for a multivitamin liquid I could take.  However, I failed to find one without flavors I could not tolerate, citric acid, or other substances I do not tolerate.

Since I have been using some powders..  I found powdered probiotic.  The container full is lasting over 2 months and was for`16 dollars.  There were no additives, but only probiotics in it.  I recently found CoQ10 powder. It contained COQ10.   I discovered it would be a 6 month supply.  I really like the powders bottle last so long.  30 capsules and reordering the next month gets old.  Besides capsules sometimes come through me unchanged.  Hopefully, that is better by now, but I feel not to take chances I don't have to.

I have found vitamin D in liquid form without additives that I cannot have.

I see , well thats alot of info :) Thanks I have been thinking about this since I posted , I guess not everything is absorbed in the small intestine , I don't know for a fact. I am just guessing that! But I don't know if it was the Dr. telling me I was doing so great , I lost another 4 lbs. and I get an A for the day or it was that Vitamin D3 that I took in liquid form. But I got some energy when I got home!! Yay!!  So I like the D3 :) Liquid!! :)

I'm under the impression that the liquid vitamins are easier to absorb. As soon as I can I'm switching to a liquid multivitamin. I can take capsule B-Complex multiple times a day (I don't anymore...) without feeling any effects. I've also been taking gelcap D3 1000 IIU and my last vitamin D tests was still low. So I'm not absorbing anything. Granted, I have read that people with autoimmune disease (I have Sjogren's Syndrome) can have chronically low vitamin D levels.

I would say it's worth trying it out for a while and seeing how you feel. My plan is to get Nature's Plus Source of Life liquid. The Gold version has more D3 and B vitamins, but I want to be able to supplement those separately.

I never thought of a liquid multi vitamin , I guess I think of the energy factor. I have such low energy level. It is terrible!! So I look for liquid energy lol ... I might look into liquid Multi. Thank you!!

Yes, I too was taking capsules, B complex vitamins. Then I noticed after a few weeks that I was not getting the effects from it. So I tried liquid for a while and lost the effects too, after a while . SO THEN (UUGH!), I took it a step further and got B complex injections. This helped a lot, a heck of a lot! It became too pricey and it really sucks I have to get them weekly (that is how long they lasted) :(. I just stopped cold turkey. It has been about 4 months since my last injection but I do feel pretty energetic enough to go through the day without a crash. Once I am able to afford them again, I am going to continue with the injections!  Nonetheless, they did help with my energy and I would ask to consider this route, if you are able too. Good Luck!

I cannpt beg my Dr. To give me a B12 shot!! I have begged him I am within the normal range of course it is the bottom of that normal range so he won't give me a B12 shot. I was going to ask him If I can just pay out of pocket for one. But pffttt I get tired of asking him to do stuff and he says I don't need it. My vitamin levels are low but normal. So I have no energy!! What do I do? Take vitamins. I don't absorb them. pfftttt!! It is a never ending battle with him!! I am sick of it!

I take a Vitamin supplement called "ALL-ONE" which is powder form and you mix it into juice each morning.

I don't know much about the B-vitamins, but one thing you can do (I've done this) is take the powder out of the capsule and put it in juice (or in yogurt or applesauce). Tastes kinda yucky, but if it helps ya feel better, it's worth it, right? :-)

I even tried adding the powder from a B-100 capsule to bread dough before baking it. It wasn't a good result, so I don't recommend that route.

Good luck!  :)

Ah, ok. "Doc's orders", I get it. If you truley feel the need of getting an injection, I would recommend other resources. I DID get my injections through a local spa. I live in southern california and there are spas that do the shots! I get them from certified physicians and sometimes an ophathomologist, so there is no need for me to get defensive about their credidentials. Hope this helps! Good luck Dave!

My friend has Crohns and she said she has the shots so she will give me one the next time she gets her serum for it. That would ROCK!! I don't know of anyone eles that would give me one? I don't know if I can get them at the pharmacy or ??? I just don't know.

I think the liquid vitamins are potentially helpful.  If your digestion is in a bad state and the vitamin pills aren't being broken down, then it seems pretty clear they aren't going to help much.  The bacteria in you gut are also important in the absorption and even production of some vitamins.  We really are an amazingly complex symbiotic organism.  So taking pro-biotics may help your vitamin levels and absorption also.

If you are using oil carried vitamins it is best to keep them refrigerated.  Oils can go rancid and that may affect their vitamin potency.  There was a study of vitamin D pills a while back that showed many are not really accurately labeled.  The study showed many Vitamin D pills are lower in potency than their label says, and some actually contained almost no Vitamin D at all.  But it didn't list the brands they tested.  They suggested looking for the USP mark on vitamins or the NSF International certification.

One bottle tested in the study was certified by the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention — an independent organization that sets standards for Open Original Shared Link, and certifies supplements for companies that allow their products to be tested. The amount of vitamin D in USP-certified pills was generally very close to the amount stated on the label. According to the USP, pills should contain between 90 to 120 percent of the dose stated on the label.

"There are not many manufacturers that have the USP mark, but it may be worth the extra effort to look for it," LeBlanc said. Another company that certifies supplements is NSF International.

In the study, the researchers analyzed 12 bottles of vitamin D supplements (each made by a different manufacturer), bought at 5 different stores in Portland, Oregon, and tested five pills from each bottle. The labeled dose on the bottles ranged from 1000 international units (IUs) to 10,000 IUs.

All five pills met the USP standard in just 25 percent of the bottles.

I am not really sure if my vitamins are being absorbed or not. All I know is I have 0 energy or close to it. And I have been taking vitamins per dr. orders and I still have 0 energy. So in my own head I want something that absorbs better. I have been trying chewable because I have a hard time swallowing. Then from there sublingual B12 and chewable vitamins. Now I have Vit. B3 in liquid form and sublingual b12. and chewables .....still nothing.... It seems to help some at first but then seems to die off.... I think what I need to do is visit my Dr. I have not seen him since his office called and said I had Celiac. I went once to the office but he was out of town. I guess sometimes frustration sets in. And I look for answers eles where .. Thanks for the Links I will def look into them :)

Well I love the 1st link.. Probably not B12 at all just poor absorption is why I feel the way I do. :(

Looked into the USP verified supplements. Only 4 brands. None of which are gluten free that I saw and no liquids to be found. Nature's Way (the only brand I recognised) doesn't even make a liquid supplement.

Here's a link the list of USP certified vitamins brands.  It's a short list, but Naturemade is on it.  They have gluten-free vitamins.  I don't know about the others if they have gluten-free or not.

The four brands are:

Naturemade

TruNature

Kirkland

Berkley + Jensen

There are links to the brands certified products on the page also.

I got some Concen Trace, Trace Mineral drops today. They taste like they just came out of the bottom of something , but hey I guess it may have some health benefits :) ....

PaulM Rookie

I had cancer in the tongue 5 years age, now clear and fine. While getting radiation I was given infusions of a cocktail of drugs, took 2 hours. From being sofa ridden I was able to carry on a normal life, maybe better than normal. After the radiation was finished the infusions finished and I slowly became more fatigued. Doctor put me on iron tablets, which I have been taking for a long time.

I'm also on iodine tablets because that's lacking.

Now I'm diagnosed with Celiac Disease and had two weekly injections of iron. Already I feel a little better.

Reading this it seems tablets don't help a lot, so I will ask the specialists at the hospital if I can have infusions, not the 2 hour ones, to get me back on course. If not it's down to taking liquid vitamins. As I live in Czech and covered by National Health here, I might just insist. Still I will keep up to date with the info here.

Thank you PaulM So sorry about you past problems. I seen the pic with your dog. If that is post cancer you sure look great now! Glad to hear your on the road to recovery!  Thats always a plus huh?

PaulM Rookie

Yes that picture was taken last month on the bridge at Mostar in Bosnia, Google it for more info.

Compared to what I was like, I'm a shadow of my former self. Still they thought I was a goner when they found the cancer, it was what Michael Douglas had just a lot more developed. Still every day is a bonus, all I want is to know that if I can manage the Gluten problem I can get back to getting some energy back.

w8in4dave Community Regular

I know the energy thing for sure! I am sure it will come back slowly after you heal :) and start eating and absorbing vitamins.

PaulM Rookie

I would like to hope it does. I don't do patience very well and anything that can speed it up will be a help. Finding more and more Gluten free products here, going to start searching for mail order companies here in the EU and hopefully Czech.

On the good side, I've been cooking for myself for years and especially now I'm retired and have a problem with my saliva, spicy foods and swallowing. So with a little adjustment I think it will be easy to avoid the foods that are bad for me.

My wife made some muffins today, with corn flour, and they were great. Will tackle doing some cookies in the week.

w8in4dave Community Regular

Wonderful for you and her!! it is so nice to have someone that is understanding with helping you!! As in Gluten Free cooking and such! good luck to you!!

Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

@catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
