Foods For Healing

Hi all,

Recently diagnosed and have completely de-glutened! I'm looking for suggestions on any foods that can help to promote faster healing of the small intestine. Are there any foods that can speed up recovery? I have not had an opportunity to see a dietician yet, and am looking for suggestions. Here's a typical day of eating for me (I only drink water):

Breakfast: Poached egg, smoothie (kale/spinach/chard, berries, OJ, greek yogurt, water, banana)

Snack: Apple

Lunch: Chicken, tomato, basil and feta salad (with olive oil)

Snack: Nuts (i.e. walnuts, cashews or almonds)

Dinner: Homemade turkey chili (lean turkey, tomatoes, kidney beans, peppers, onions, spices)

Dessert: Banana with natural peanut butter, coconut and a few chocolate chips

Suggestions on diet overall and healing foods appreciated!

Thanks so much.

I have nothing to say but am really interested to see what everyone eles says.

Everyone heals at the rate they heal at. As far as I know, there is no real way to speed it up.

Your diet is certainly healthy provided you are not allergic or intolerant to any of the foods you subscribed.  Some celiac disease patients often have to give up dairy products until there is sufficient healing of the villi.  I'm assuming you feel good eating all these foods!

JosieToo Explorer

Hmm. How would I know if I have a food intolerance or allergy? The only food I know I'm allergic to is shellfish.

Truth is, I don't really have any symptoms other than heartburn which is managed by medication - so I really couldn't tell you if something affected me or not. Everything seems ok!

Will eating dairy slow-down healing?

Were you asking what foods have a vitamin punch that help heal with great vitamins and minerals? Thats what I thought you were asking. Because it sounds like what your eating are very vitamin enriched food. So are you asking what other foods are vitamin punched foods so to speak?

Basically. Just wondering if there are any particular foods that are recommended to help heal the gut more quickly. If there are specific vitamin or mineral recommendations I can figure out what foods are best sources of those. Thanks!

I know! I think I am on the same page you are :) I am wanting something to help me heal. I think what we are going to get is really there is nothing but , time , makes you heal. Time and a good healthy None gluten diet. Other than that it is nothing. Take your Vitamins and Minerals your probiotics and wait it out. I want to feel better yesterday.

JosieToo Explorer

Thanks. Just diagnosed and I'm a pretty Type A person - who wants to get things done!! :)

get some probiotics they help with the big D. and eat as healthy as you can. Try and stay away from processed. Take some vitamins and you are on your way to being mended.... it's about all ..........

I am 3 months in and I feel much better. Still having some problems but over all before Dx's I was feeling like a 1 on a scale of 1-10 now I feel like a 5 on a good day a 6 so I feel much better but I want that 10 soo so bad!!

I have been told that avocado helps clence your gut in a gentle way. I don't know if there is anything to that, but i love avocado and eat it every day, så I hope it is true :)

A probiotic supplement will help some, and to have a healthy and natural diet, but it seems like you alredy do :)

I was getting ready to post the same question! I've been gluten-free for a month, but I am still not feeling great.  I read in several blogs that it is best to eat cooked fruits and vegees instead of raw. The Dietician told me to avoid all processed gluten-free foods for a few months.  Also, I read that drinking bone broth was healing - contains collagen, good fats, and proteins.  It can't hurt, so I am going to try.

Absolutely!! gilligan!! I have heard the same thing about bone broth :)

Welcome to the celiac.com communiuty, @Matthias! Yes, we have been aware that this can be an issue with mushrooms but as long as they are rinsed thoroughly it should not be a problem since the mushrooms don't actually incorporate the gluten into their cellular structure. For the same reason, one needs to be careful when buying aged cheeses and products containing yeast because of the fact that they are sometimes cultured on gluten-containing substrate.

The one kind of food I had been buying and eating without any worry for hidden gluten were unprocessed veggies. Well, yesterday I discovered yet another pitfall: cultivated mushrooms. I tried some new ones, Shimeji to be precise (used in many asian soup and rice dishes). Later, at home, I was taking a closer look at the product: the mushrooms were growing from a visible layer of shredded cereals that had not been removed. After a quick web research I learned that these mushrooms are commonly cultivated on a cereal-based medium like wheat bran. I hope that info his helpful to someone.

I might suggest you consider buckwheat groats. https://www.amazon.com/Anthonys-Organic-Hulled-Buckwheat-Groats/dp/B0D15QDVW7/ref=sr_1_4_pp?crid=GOFG11A8ZUMU&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.bk-hCrXgLpHqKS8QJnfKJLKbKzm2BS9tIFv3P9HjJ5swL1-02C3V819UZ845_kAwnxTUM8Qa69hKl0DfHAucO827k_rh7ZclIOPtAA9KjvEEYtaeUV06FJQyCoi5dwcfXRt8dx3cJ6ctEn2VIPaaFd0nOye2TkASgSRtdtKgvXEEXknFVYURBjXen1Nc7EtAlJyJbU8EhB89ElCGFPRavEQkTFHv9V2Zh1EMAPRno7UajBpLCQ-1JfC5jKUyzfgsf7jN5L6yfZSgjhnwEbg6KKwWrKeghga8W_CAhEEw9N0.eDBrhYWsjgEFud6ZE03iun0-AEaGfNS1q4ILLjZz7Fs&dib_tag=se&keywords=buckwheat%2Bgroats&qid=1769980587&s=grocery&sprefix=buchwheat%2Bgroats%2Cgrocery%2C249&sr=1-4&th=1 Takes about 10 minutes to cook. Incidentally, I don't like quinoa either. Reminds me and smells to me like wet grass seed. When its not washed before cooking it makes me ill because of saponins in the seed coat. Yes, it can be difficult to get much dietary calcium without dairy. But in many cases, it's not the amount of calcium in the diet that is the problem but the poor uptake of it. And too much calcium supplementation can interfere with the absorption of vitamins and minerals in general because it raises gut pH.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.
