Vitamin D Supplements

I know how important it is for us to get enough Vit D3, since Celiacs tend to be deficient in it.

The sun is supposed to be the best source, but I'm sensitive to the sun. Another other source is cod liver oil, but I'm sensitive to fish, and I don't want the excess vit A in it. Most D3 supplements are made from lanolin (wool oil) (cholecalciferol), it's what is in most vit D3 gel caps, but I'm allergic to wool.

Has anyone who is allergic to wool taken the cholecalciferol caps and had any problems? I read it isn't a problem to take it with a wool allergy, but since I've had new histamine/allergy problems I'm being extra careful.

I was taking them before without realizing what it was made of and I don't know that I had a problem, but I'm so sensitive now that I wanted to get some input before taking it again.

I had no idea that D3 came from wool.  Anyhow... I did find this information regarding Source of Life Vit D that claims to be vegan and contain D3 from mushrooms... although there is some question about how they get the mushrooms to produce D3:  Open Original Shared Link

However, be careful of the D2 - which is synthetic and apparently not useable by the body and comes with a greater risk of toxicity.

You may have already read this, but it seems that the D3 is derived from "lanolin from the sheep wool is chemically altered in the lab to produce vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol." - it doesn't seem like this would cause an allergic reaction as it isn't the actual wool that is in the pill.  (But that's just me hypothesizing.)

Thanks NGC!

I am, of course, sensitive to mushrooms also!!! I absolutely did mean to say D3, in fact I'll change that in my original post.

I didn't have much luck trying to research the info online. Seems D3 sources are made from wool. I am thinking though that since plenty of people seem to be allergic to wool, and D3 continues to be made from wool, that it hopefully isn't a problem.

I really appreciate you looking it up and it's helpful to know that it's altered in the lab (never thought I'd say that about something!), but in this case it sounds like a good thing.

Thanks so much for your input! :)

i take mega dose of prescription D2 and it is delivered in soybean oil.  so is the D3 i have taken in the past.  have you had your levels checked?  i only take d under a doctor's supervision/monitoring because it is dangerous to take too much.

The gp do different vit d too now. I costs more but I didnt tolerate d3 in normal form. I get captules d3 50000iu called aciferol d3, i sometimes lower dose in my own captues, seams no side effect for me and due find out if my vit d higher from 25 which is quite low to more safe level like over 50. It on aciferold3.com. Doesnt say has wheat gluten but i  not been diagnosed Celiacs but do not agree with wheat due cfs / m.e I am hoping mine has gone up last 6 months.

I was low when I was checked after dx. My GI put me on 1000 IU D3 daily, plus I get 400 IU in my Calcium/Magnesium. My levels were fine when I checked again, but I haven't had them checked again at least 6 months. I like to have all my vitamin levels checked regularly but it's expensive, no insurance. Thanks for the reminder, I may want to have it checked again.

I'll look into the Aciferol too.

Thanks!

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
