Dr said on his inspection of her duodenum, she definitely has celiac, there is inflammation, but mild. We see the nutritionist on June 5, but he said we can go ahead and start going gluten free now. Said this will give us a little time to clean out the kitchen, replace utensils, and ease into the new diet. By the time we see the nutritionist, we'll have some experience under out belts and be much further along.

If there is anyone who has a good first timer shopping list of staples, I'd love to see it. I plan to start the kitchen cleaning and CC item removal today.

She's feeling pretty good after the biopsy, and seems eager to start the new diet.

Here's to a brighter future and better life!

Whew!  You are on the home stretch!  Congrats!

You can search this forum for tips to kick you off or g\Google the rest.  Besides sticking to whole foods (you mentioned that was one of your strategies and it's a good one) etc., I would bake some gluten-free goodies to freeze and keep for parties and other events when everyone else is eating yummy gluten free foods.  I always have a stocked freezer with things ready to go.  Nothing worse than not being able to eat especially when you are young!

Take care!  She will be so much better soon!

Congratulations on getting a DX! You've already crossed one of the harder hurdles. :)

Here's hoping that her health will improve rapidly on the diet. You're in the right place for information, this forum has surely helped me.

:) Glad it's all done.

Be sure to check all labels. I remember tossing / giving away lots of soup cans, boullion, soy sauce, teriyakii, worchestershire sauce, mixed spices, malt vinegar, barbeque  sauce, sausages, and mixes (spaghetti, taco, meatloaf spice envelopes). I got rid of all baking supplies like sugar and baking soda, that might have had a flour coated measuring cup dipped into it. I also got rid of things like butter, peanut butter, jam, mustard, and mayo that may have had a crummy knife dipped into it.  Check shampoos, toothpaste, and lotions, as well as all vitamins and medicines. And then I also did the obvious tossing of all breads, bread crumbs, crackers and cookies.

Just read every label and you will be fine.

And I agree to stock up on some treats, maybe even buy some Udi's muffins for treats to keep in the freezer. I found having a gluten-free stash really helpful when I need to whip up a treat to take places so my kids can partake in food based festivities.

Best wishes.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
