Can Lactose Intolerance Come Back?

Just wondering, in the last month or so I have been feeling queasy after eating hard cheese and other dairy products.  I have also been glutened twice during this period.  I am just wondering, having been able to tolerate hard cheese after a few weeks of going gluten free a year ago, could this glutening be responsible for damaging the tips of the villi enough, where I understand lactase is produced, to bring back lactose intolerance.  I'm hoping this is only a temporary thing.

Hard cheeses are mostly lactose free.  They do have lots of casein in them though.  If you are having reactions to a food it's usually a good idea to avoid it for 6 months or so and then try it again.

Yes, having been glutened, your gut will loose some of what it needs to break down the hard cheese. You can gain that back with probiotics and the healing of your gut. Takes me a while to be able to eat greek yogurt after being glutened. But there are good probiotics in greek yogurt. There's also pill form, drinks in health food stores, plain yogurt with no frills, and probiotic liquid yogurt drinks. As soon as you find out what the glutening was from, and heal up, with probiotics you'll eat hard cheese just fine again.

When I get glutened I seem to lose the ability to produce lactase for a couple of weeks.  I also seem to lose the ability to digest fat.  With cheese, which is lower in lactose than milk, it might be the fat getting you rather than lactose.  These things are temporary as long as I fix my diet.

Thank you everyone.  Steph, you do sound like you have very similar reactions to me, perhaps it is the fat.  Oh well... back to the tinned sardines (my nutritionalist said I should eat them for my calcium intake!)

      Thanks for the list too makes me realise why I still get symptoms after cutting gluten , all that reading has just made sense to why I'm still struggling , thankyou Scott Adams very insightful , I've been baking to and there is xanthum gum in the flour , I understand now why I still have issues with that too, and ive had to cut dairy also , i had a terrible flare few months ago and my throat also was very irritable and I had sinuses issues all makes sence 👍
