Getting Tested For Celiacs Without Eating Gluten Again?

Is there any way to get tested for celiacs without having to reintroduce gluten into the diet? I suspect that I have celiacs, and I also feel like a real diagnoses would make people take me a little more seriously. I just dont know if it's worth it to purposely expose my self to gluten. My reactions are so violent and uncomfortable for a matter of weeks. What do you all suggest? Is there another way to get the results?

No, unfortunately there isn't a way to test for celiac, without extensive gluten exposure.

If your reactions to gluten exposure are that violent, then you likely have your answer already.

I attempted to gluten challenge and to had to quit after 10 days, due to severe neurological symptoms that landed me in the E.R. I just made the decision that I was going to be gluten free for the rest of my life. For me, getting a diagnosis is unquestionably not worth it.

Really, if you want a diagnosis so that other people will take you seriously, a diagnosis may or may not help you with that. There are many DX'ed celiacs who have to deal with people not taking them seriously.

My close friends and family know what I've been through and where I'm at. My inlaws even purchased  a separate grill for gluten free only items for me to use at their house. (I didn't ask or even imply that such a thing should be done, they just bought it out of the goodness of their hearts) Many people don't really know or care what my DX is, they just know that I can't and won't eat gluten, period, end of statement. Overtime, if you display consistent behavior and never willfully cheat on the diet, most people will understand that it's serious and that you're not a fad dieter.

If you decide to stay with a gluten free diet without a diagnosis, being up front with your family and friends helps. Let them know that you may have celiac but are unable to safely nail down a diagnosis, so for your own safety, you have to follow a strict gluten free diet. Let them know what that entails and also let them know that you don't expect them to go out of their way for you and that you will plan to provide your own safe food items for any event.

I've often seen hospitalization cited as a reason to get a diagnosis (i.e. getting safe food if you had to be in the hospital) but I don't think that's a huge issue. When I was with my son in the hospital for a broken leg, they cheerfully allowed us to order off of the gluten free menu, no proof of diagnosis necessary. And if you're in a hospital without a reliable gluten free menu, you can pretty much plan on eating whole fresh fruit until your spouse/friend/parent/child brings you food from home.

Good luck!

If you have been gluten-free for, let's say, less than a year it is possible to still have a positive celiac disease test, but unlikely. I was still testing positive in the tTG IgA test at around a year gluten-free, although I doubt that is the norm.

The endoscopic biopsy only requires a 2-4 week gluten challenge. Could you last two weeks or so?

You may just have to stay gluten-free without testing if it is too much for you. There are many people around here in the same boat. :)

Just an aside on terminology: it is celiac or celiac disease. Celiacs are people who have celiac disease.

I take both Benfotiamine and TTFD.   You might want to start with the Benfotiamine for a few days and then add in the TTFD.   You can look for NeuroMag (Magnesium Threonate).  A magnesium glycinate is fine, too.  Doctor's Best is a good brand.  Don't take more than 300mg total per day of magnesium or it may have a laxative effect.   Be sure to take the B Complex.  The Benfotiamine and TTFD will need the other B vitamins.

Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine has 100MG of Ben and 25 of Thia..... Do you think this is the one I should take or Objective Nutrients Thiamax (TTFD) which has 100MG Thiamine. How much magnesium should I look for? I take the womens 50+ multivitamin since consumerlabs stated and tested that it has the right amount of vitamins and not too much for men and doesn't have BHT which has shown to cause liver cancer in animals. I was never big with multivitamins as well as doctors I just read when I was first going gluten free to take a multi but I think I will stop them and work on trying the super B Thia and Ben, Mag.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.
