Dealing With The Fatigue And Head Fog?

Magister Mundi

Magister Mundi Rookie

Hello all,

I've been doing this whole gluten free thing since my diagnosis two years ago. I'm pretty good at it, but like anyone, sometimes I get blindsided by gluten cross-contamination.

One of my main symptoms when glutened is head fog and fatigue. Sometimes I also get a nice dose of both even when I'm pretty certain I haven't been glutened at all (ex: after a week of eating nothing but fruit, vegetables, and poultry from the farm I was staying at), but it's definitely much worse when I've been glutened.

I'm a journalist, so my job demands very strict adherence to deadline, and also requires a high level of activity when I'm working. So, when I get totally wiped out for two days straight, like I did this weekend, it's a serious problem for me. How do others with these symptoms cope? Do you have any tips on how to at least get that fatigue and head fog to a manageable level?

Thanks in advance!

I get mind fog, headaches and this fatigue as a gluten reaction too. I also noticed that sometimes I experience a low even with no gluten intoxication that I could recall. However, being from a country where gluten is eaten religiously, I usually attribute  it to cross contamination. My job also demands vigil so I know how it feels. Vit B 12 daily is sort of soothing it for me but no strategy out of it yet.

There's the obvious healthy stuff – I try to exercise as much as I feel up to it, remember to take my multi-vitamin and make sure I have healthy, filling food packed for the day.

But also, lots of coffee and sugary candy! It's not great in the long-term, but iced coffee and Skittles help if I have to do focused, hard work for a few hours.

Yep, coffee.  I used to rely on coffee a lot.... And occasionally that healthy stuff like exercise.

I hope you feel better come Monday.

I know and hate brain fog as much as the next poster here. My go to's is like most filling food, light walks in open air . Outside of that strong aromatics, while I don't do coffee the smell seems to help me.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
