Still Have Constant Gas While On Gluten-Free Diet

I have taken a blood test and skin prick test to see if I was allergic to milk and dairy, but it came back negative. I don't know if these tests are also good for lactose intolerance. I have been on a gluten-free diet for a year so far. Gas seemed to subside until the past month when I traveled out of town for work. It has been a very stressful job. But, I don't really remember if I had ti before I traveled. I just know it was not as bad. The kind of gas I am experiencing is smelly and lasts 24/7. It slowly leaks out and keeps reproducing. I don't know if it's stress related or food related.

 

Has anyone experienced this type of 24/7 gas. What can I do?

Have you been tested for SIBO or parasites? Have you eliminated dairy in case of lactose intolerance?

To add to cyclinglady's questions, have you had antibiotics over the last few months, as this may have reduced the amount of good bacteria in your gut? In that case you may find taking some powerful probiotics helpful.  

 

I definitely had lactose intollerance at DX although could manage small amounts of hard cheese.  A year on from DX, when I was introducing more dairy, I noticed that I ended up with trapped wind and lower abdominal pain.  I took some powerful probiotics (capsule form), last thing at night on an empty stomach, and cut right back on dairy and saw a huge improvement.  

 

I think the dairy intollerance in my case is temporary due to villi damage but the pain and bloating was not helped by the fact that in 2013/4 I had to take two courses of antibiotics and never took any probiotics to compensate.  I still get bloating but less often and when I do I go back to cutting back on dairy and taking some probiotics.

I have been eating more cheese here. I am going to see if cutting the cheese (no pun intended) helps.

Egger - funny you should say that a about a week ago I increased my consumption of cheese because there wasn't much else to eat - I don't plan well when I shop - and I got C and a bit of lower abdominal pain.

For me it started happening out of the blue and I was dairy free and gluten free for quite awhile, I found out  xanthan gum was causing me big BIG problems. The same problems as you are having.

That's a revelation. Isn't xanthan gum in many gluten-free products (at least the packaged stuff)?

Egger it is in most all processed gluten-free foods and also things not labeled gluten-free, some brands of flavored almonds etc.....  when I first went gluten-free I could eat things with it and had no problem but now I can not eat it at all.

:) for me it is sugar that makes me toot! carbs/fructose/maple syrup!!! my husband always busts me when I've dipped into the sugar world!!!

      I was suffering from PF just previous to being dx with celiac disease about 25 yr. ago but have not been troubled with it since. Not sure what the connection between the two is of if there is one. But I do know it is a very painful condition that takes your breath away when it strikes.

      I have dealt with proctalgia fugax on and off for a year now. It feels almost paralyzing during an episode and they have started lasting longer and longer, sometimes 20+ minutes. I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and wonder if the 2 are related. I did request a prescription for topical nitroglycerin for my PF episodes and that has helped tremendously!

      Hey @Butch68, I also have dermatitis herpetiformis but don't suffer from it anymore. I used to drink Guinness too but I drink Cider now when out on social occasions. I assume you are in Ireland or the UK. If it's any good to you ... 9 White Deer based in Cork brew a range of gluten-free products including a gluten-free Stout. I'm not sure if they are certified though. https://www.9whitedeer.ie/ I haven't come across any certified gluten-free stouts this side of the pond.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.
