Toddler Has Presitant And Spreading Rash?

Our son has never had a skin reaction to gluten before, and we dont think he has gotten gluten in the last couple weeks, but yesterday he broke out in a rash that started only in his diapered area, but now goes all the way to his toes, and his hand are starting to break out to. The reash does not recact at ll to hydrocotorizone cream (1%), nor destin. He does not seem to even notice its there, it does not appear to itch him at all, and I have not seen him scratch it.

He has a doc's apt already for 4pm monday but we might try to bump that up in light of this.

If it was the Dh or what ever its called when some ppl react to gluten on thier skin, how wouuld we know? What would be a tell tail sign?

Is it sand papery? It could be fifth's disease.... If it is, it's not so bad for him... will take several weeks to clear out of his system. He will be TIRED and get itchy. Tired will last for several weeks.... Adults who get fifths can get JOINT PAIN THAT IS REALLY BAD. - I know first hand- <_< Lasts several MONTHS and you cannot understate how bad it can be. Rocked our small town last spring. Many adults out of commission with it.

No, not sandpapery, many bit red welts, well of various sizes, but distinctly seperate welts.

I never had a skin reaction to gluten until after I started the diet and got glutened. If I have the slightest amount of gluten, I will get skin break-outs. They are mosquito/chicken pox like bumps which are usually itchy and they sometimes form a rash. I'm not sure if it is DH which is celiac related or if it is a wheat allergy reaction. Thankfully I've never had enough gluten to find out how bad it gets.

That sounds right, but he is not scratching.

They don't always itch. Some seem to itch when they first break out and then the itching seems to go away.

If it is DH, how fast after gluten would it set in?
Mine come within 12-24 hours after I get glutened.

Does this DH stuff only happen when you EAT or when you touch? Or boht?

I've only noticed it from ingesting gluten. I've touched gluten since going on the gluten free diet and it didn't seem to do anything.

Hmm he does not not seem to have any of the other normal I ate gluten symtpons, and he was with us on the day we first noticed it.

PHEW back form the doc, its "only" somthing called "Hand, foot and mouth disease".

Was in a fit trying to guess where glutne could have come from LOL I guess its natural to get to senstize to gluten problems....

It can become quite irritated in the mouth and throat. My friend's children had it and they were CRANKY and very sore in their mouths. Popsicles or jello are in order.

My dd had Hand, foot & mouth last summer. She felt really bad and her mouth was really sore. It's hard with very young children because they have a hard time discribing how they feel. From what her ped. said it is highly contagious amoung children. Has your ds run a fever with the virus?

No fever. And yea the our peditrician siad same thing, aslo said that it is at its most contagious BEFORE they break out in the rash. Prbly running around his day school now. :(

Glad you found out what it was...hope he's feeling better soon!

I did the same thing a while back, Em was sick, and I was *sure* she had been glutened. She had a high fever, and later broke out in a rash. Turned out to be plain ole case of Roseola! :D

      Airborne Gluten?

      Hello everyone, I was on here a few months ago trying to figure out if I was reacting to something other than gluten, to which a very helpful response was that it could be xanthin or guar gum.       Rectal pain

      I was suffering from PF just previous to being dx with celiac disease about 25 yr. ago but have not been troubled with it since. Not sure what the connection between the two is of if there is one. But I do know it is a very painful condition that takes your breath away when it strikes.

      I have dealt with proctalgia fugax on and off for a year now. It feels almost paralyzing during an episode and they have started lasting longer and longer, sometimes 20+ minutes. I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and wonder if the 2 are related. I did request a prescription for topical nitroglycerin for my PF episodes and that has helped tremendously...

      Hey @Butch68, I also have dermatitis herpetiformis but don't suffer from it anymore. I used to drink Guinness too but I drink Cider now when out on social occasions. I assume you are in Ireland or the UK. If it's any good to you ... 9 White Deer based in Cork brew a range of gluten-free products including a gluten-free Stout. I'm not sure if they...

      I’m wondering if anyone has had any experience with the gluten challenge. My teenager completed a gluten challenge over the summer, it ended up being 10 weeks although she stopped being consistent eating gluten after 6. Her previous endoscopy was negative but this past August it was positive after the gluten challenge. If you have done the gluten challenge, how long did it take you to feel back to normal? It took about two months before she got “glutened” again but now she’s having difficult coming back from that and has a lot of fatigue. I’m hoping someone has some advice!

      Hello everyone, I was on here a few months ago trying to figure out if I was reacting to something other than gluten, to which a very helpful response was that it could be xanthin or guar gum.    Since then, I have eaten items with both of those ingredients in it and I have not reacted to it, so my mystery reaction to the Digiorno pizza remains.    HOWEVER, I realized something recently- the last time I got glutened and the most recent time I got glutened, I truly never ate anything with gluten in it. But i did breathe it in.    The first time was a feed barrel for my uncle’s chickens- all of the dust came right up, and most of what was in there was wheat/grains. The second time was after opening a pet food bag and accidentally getting a huge whiff of it.    When this happens, I tend to have more neurological symptoms- specifically involuntary muscle spasms/jerks everywhere. It also seems to cause migraines and anxiety as well. Sometimes, with more airborne exposure, I get GI symptoms, but not every time.    My doctor says he’s never heard of it being an airborne problem, but also said he isn’t well versed in celiac specifics. I don’t have the money for a personal dietician, so I’m doing the best I can.    is there anyone else who has experienced this, or gets similar neurological symptoms?
