Brown Urine

I've been gluten-free for a little over a week. Today I was driving all day. After about 6 hours in the car, I had to get more gas and urinate. I was surprised to see that it was a dark brown! I can't tell if it was cloudy or not. It was in a urinal, not in the bowl like usual, so it might have seemed a bit darker, being undiluted. It was not dehydration, as earlier that day I had light colored urine, and a few hours later, light colored urine again. If I hadn't been looking, I wouldn't have noticed it.

I'm worried because last night I had a pain deep in the middle of my lower abdomen, which at the time I took to be a gas pain or from C, but it might have been related to this strange urination? It came back this morning before this strange urination event and was rather sharp, but not severe.

I'm also on metronidazole at the moment, which I know can cause 'brown urine', but I thought it would have been consistently brown tinted and not an 'event'.

I've had a month of developing symptoms and increasing bad news. Could this be something simple? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Since no one here is a doctor, and this does not seem directly related to Celiac Disease, I would like to encourage you to see a doctor ASAP in the morning.  They have the diagnostic tools and can look to see what is causing the coloring of the urine, and do further testing if something else is wrong.  No one on the internet speculating what it can be can tell you any more than you already know.

While this could be just a side effect of the med I agree with laura. You should call your doctor's office or stop at your local urgent care if your doctor isn't available.

Ditto.  Good luck.  Let us know what happens.

The doctor is at a loss, supposes it must have been the metronidazole. Recent blood tests didn't even hint at any kidney disfunction and urine tests a week before, and now a week later, are absolutely normal. Weird.

I'm not a doctor.  So, my non-doctor observations/experience:

Darker urine is one of the symptoms I can get, if I get glutened.  However, going 6 hours without urinating is not recommended for anyone.  Going long periods without urinating can lead to darker urine, but that's temporary.  It's good that you had your doc check things, because it can certainly be indicative of other things going on.

As a one-time thing, it's not something that I personally would worry about.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
