hi all

yesterdy i made up some of those wonderful brownies i read about on here from the gluten pantry and i bought some duncan hines frosting too. i read somewhere there are gluten free but since i was having seizures last night the first time in 5 weeks i was wondering if this is not true i looked it up and they say there are but made on same lines as gluten but are washed. as anyone else had a problem with them i am so trying to find the culprit which as set me back in my get better road.

which type of duncan hines frosting did you get ? the homestyle kind is gluten-free...but the new whipped one is NOT gluten-free. hope you feel better soon!

I've had a problem with Duncan Heinz frosting as well, and no longer use it.

I've had it and been fine.

Hope you feel better.

i checked the package and they are the homestyle creamy version, well maybe its not that it gets so frustrating when you get so sick and dont know where it came from

I have a can of Duncan Hines Homestyle frosting right in front of me, and it says "BARLEY MALT" right on the label. I've never noticed this before, but have always felt ill after their frosting. I'd be very, very careful with their products.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
