Just venting.....

Im just venting, I guess.  I have been gluten free for about 3 months and I have been so up and down the entire time.  I have been dealing with stomach pain again for a few weeks.  Every day.  I have pain when I wake up.  I have pain all day.  I have pain in the evening.  I have pain right now.  I sit in meetings and think about how I am in pain.   I have zero interest in food, and am starting to get really anxious and down.  I am just so over this whole thing.  I am normally a very positive person and just take what comes my way, but it is hard to do wihen I don't feel well.

I am sure my pity party will end and I will get back to being the positve person I am.  But, right now, I just want my stomach pain to go away.

The learning curve for the gluten free diet is so steep!  Mistakes are made when you are a newbie and even for the old timers!  ?Each glutening can set you back in healing.  The reality is that it does take time to heal.  Concentrate on whole easy-to-digest foods.  I lived on stewed meats (crockpot) and over-cooked veggies for two months after my last glutening (still not sure what zapped me) as each time I ate, I was in pain.  I became lactose intolerant again and I could not digest anything hard like peanuts or even raw veggies.   I dropped weight fast.  All that resolved after three months.

When I was first diagnosed, it took me six months to resolve my anemia, a year to feel good and another to feel really good.  I was dealing with pretty severe intestinal damage (Marsh Stage IIIB).  So, give yourself more time.  Read the Newbie 101 thread under our "coping" section.  You might find it helpful.  Hang in there!  ?

Hi, I know the feeling! I've been like this again for a few months - I've been gluten free for a few years now, but have recently had problems again. I'm pretty sure I haven't had any gluten, but a, keeping a food diary to see if any other food intolerances have come to light.  So far the suspects are yeast and soya (I am already dairy intolerant).  It might be worth while to keep a food diary too, make sure you write down everything you eat and drink (and the brand names, if any), write down any symptoms you experience after each meal etc.

I agree with Cyclinglady though, with what she has said.  Hope you get some answers soon.

Hi Donna,

That's no fun! :)  I agree with the others, check your diet again.  It's easy to make mistakes and let some gluten sneak into our diet.  Think about anything new or different you may have eaten recently that you weren't eating.  Maybe you can pinpoint something (or several things) to try eliminating.

I take aspirin for pain and Pepto Bismol.  If the pain is gas then peppermint tea may help.  The pain can sure be a great motivator to change your diet eh?  Pro-biotics may help too.  I hope you get over your pain soon.  There can be a lot of back and forth symptoms when we first go gluten-free.  It takes some time for the gut to heal and the immune reaction to die down.  I understand not feeling too perky when you are in pain though.  I know I sure wasn't a happy go lucky type for a while.  Being in pain can also sap your energy and make you tired at times.  But it tends to get better over time IMHO.

May the Good Lord Jesus keep you and bless you. :)

You may have a Pity Party.  It's all part of this process.  I had so darn many Pity Parties in the beginning!  Bummer was that not many people showed up!  ha   Seriously, hang in, it will pass and  the positive feelings will come back.

I am with you on everything, but I am in for about 6 months. I eat or contact NO gluten, yet I am sick all of the time and not getting better. I actually am where I am so anxious that I left the house today for maybe 15 minutes for the first time in 2 weeks. I havent even gone to get my haircut since June of last year and I usually do that every 3 months or so, but I just get psyched out to get in a car because I know when my symptoms hit, I have about 3 seconds to get to the bathroom and I will be there for an hour at least. Good luck bud and as someone who is even a Psych major (myself) and debating grad school for counseling, I feel like a total loser for not being able to leave the house.

You are NOT a loser, Zach!  You are sick and are still in the process of recovering.  Think about getting a re-check on celiac antibodies.  See if they are improving.  If they are not,  you need to see if something else is going on.

In any case, you are not alone!  ?

Cold/flu or gluten poisoning? Hello. I've had another similar episode. I find it very difficult to differentiate between the symptoms of a cold or flu and those caused by gluten poisoning. In fact, I don't know if my current worsening is due to having eaten something that disagreed with me or if the cold I have has caused my body, which is hypersensitive, to produce symptoms similar to those of gluten poisoning.

I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I got my liver test last month and it was in normal range. Two years ago I did have a vitamin D deficiency but I'm know taking vitamin D3 pills. Last month I got my vitamin D checked and it was in normal range. I don't believe I've had my choline checked. However, I do drink almond milk eat Greek yogurt on a daily basis.

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) can be associated with low ferritin and iron deficiency. Once Celiac Disease (1% of the population affected) has been ruled out by tests the next step is to check for Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (10% of the population affected) by eliminating gluten for a trial period, then re-introduce Gluten Challange. Have you been supplementing Iron? How are your liver enzymes? Low levels of ferritin indicate iron deficiency, while  59% transferrin saturation indicates high iron levels.  Possibly indicating Fatty Liver Disease.  Choline is crucial for liver health, and deficiency is a known trigger for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver.  Some experts say that less than 10% eat the the Food and Nutrition Board established Adequate Intake that are based on the prevention of liver damage. Severe constipation and hemorrhoids may be linked to a bile or choline deficiency.  "Ninety-five percent of phospholipids (PLs) in bile is secreted as phosphatidylcholine or lecithin."  Fatty acid composition of phospholipids in bile in man   Deficiency of these bile salts causes the bile to get thick. Some people with Celiac Disease are misdiagnosed with Gall Bladder bile issues.  Removal of the gallbladder provides only temporary relief. Whether or not celiac disease or NCGS are your issues you need to look at your vitamin D blood level.

If you have hemorrhoids 1x weekly I don't see how you have time to heal from one episode before you experience another one, unless each one is a very minor event. Have you consulted a physician about your hemorrhoid issue? It's not normal to be having an episode every week unless it is really one episode that is not completely healing between weekly flareups.
