Celiac blood tests abroad

Hi All,

I'm hoping for some advice.  I'm living in Korea and for 2 months I've had gastric pain, some diarrhoea, gas and a lot of bloating. I've previously had these symptoms over the years and constipation as well but been told it was probably IBS.  However the symptoms are a lot more profound recently, the gastric pain and bloating are ongoing.  Also I have pain in my hips, ribs and pins n needles type pain in my ankles. I've read some information which mentions these symptoms with celiac and I'm now thinking this is a possibility. I do eat a diet high in pasta and bread. I had tests for autoimmune diseases but not sure if they tested for celiac, I've been told it is not commonly recognised here. Anyway they did some antibody tests which were all negative, the antibodies tested were ANA titration, Anti cardiopilin IgM, IgG and anti ccp antibody.  I would really like some advice as the rheumatologist here was not that helpful and didn't speak good English.  I've done some googling and none of these seem to be for Celiac testing, I plan to see another rheumatologist and take my Korean friend with me to discuss, I'm also due to see a gastroenterologist so hopefully I'll get answers.  In the mean time I was hoping some people on here might have some knowledge to share.  Thank you in advance :)

I am sorry that you are not well!   I had rib and hip pain.  Turns out it was oteoporosis due to celiac disease. It has resolved now that I am absorbing nutrients better by being gluten free.

Here are the tests that you can share with your doctor.

If possible get the complete panel as noted by theUniversity of Chicago.

Take care!

Hello,

Thank you for this, I will discuss with the GI doctor when I see them.  I don't think I had any of these tests as they were more concerned about possible rheumatoid arthritis as I have family history of this.  I am concerned about osteoporosis too as I've been experiencing these symptoms for many years.  Additionally I recently broke my ankle after a simple fall, it just gave way.  In addition I've my arm twice in the past 5 years!

Thanks again, hopefully I get some answers soon.

Yes, wheat is common in most soy sauces now because it speeds up the fermenting process.

For 16 years I have relied on the website glutenfreedrugs.com to determine if a pharmaceutical is gluten-free. The website has been down for at least a week. Does anyone have any information about this outage, the status of the website founder and maintainer pharmacist Steven A. Plogsted or a phone number? I did not get a response for my email to glutenfreedrugs@gmail.com in October of 2022. Steven did respond to my emails in 2012. Thanks.

Sounds like you are in the UK. With blood numbers that high, I thought docs in UK would give an official diagnosis without the biopsy. You should ask about that, so you can get support faster.  I'd try to find and print out anything that supports that in your country, get another appointment and take all of it with you. Even in the US now, some docs are doing this, my 19 year old step granddaughter got an official diagnosis here in US with just blood results a few months ago.

Is soy sauce in Korea also made from wheat like it usually is in US? I'd be concerned that even if asking about gluten, they would not be aware of or think of some like that.

That's a good idea. It can at least establish the potential for developing celiac disease and can help people decided between a celiac diagnosis and NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity). And it doesn't require a gluten challenge and can be had without a doctor's prescription.
