Son Always Sick

My son has had a horrible immune system since losing his dad to cancer 5 years ago. Three months ago he started getting migraines and acid reflux. He is 14. He was also constantly  getting 4 or 5 mouth ulcers at a time. This year he had missed 27 days of school. My dad goes to a homeopathic dr. and he told me to take him off wheat and gluten. I did and he felt great for 3 days. Then he got really sick with migraines and acid reflux. After a week and a half of this I took him to a Dr. for blood work and to be tested for Celiac. The tests came back fine. I had him off of wheat for 2 weeks before the test tho. After another week of being sick I sent him back to school. He was fine for 3 days and then symptoms came back. He has now missed 42 days of school. I ordered a DNA test for Celiac but it will only tell me if it is NOT Celiac. The school is not being supportive. The principal told me ,"if he is not burning up with fever or bleeding out the eyeballs, he should be in school."

It could be Celiac related it could not I would suggest checking here on a gluten challenge and getting the testing done with the complete panel, Open Original Shared Link

IT could be many things, autoimmune disease normally show in in blood test in some form, the ulcers could be a sign of food allergies or a immune response to something, or they could be many other things like a simple imbalance or deficiency. I get these nasty blood blisters in my mouth from corn which I am allergic to. The taking him off and seeing a improvement is a clue. If all else fails I would suggest assuming he had Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity and to remove it from his diet. The rebound you saw could have a small trace of gluten from a cross contaminated meal, or snack that was not gluten free. After removal of something that offends the body or immune system it can jump back with higher sensitivity if the offenders is reintroduced...few other things I can think of be should let the doctors do more test and see if immune response markers are present before giving those theories.

If you wish to forgo the challenge an assume wheat is the only issue do read the newbie 101 threads....medical gluten free is very strict compared to the "fad diet" gluten free. We have to have dedicated cook ware and often avoid eating out without proper research and places with dedicated gluten free cook ware and training.

For now start keeping a food diary, record everything he eats, seasonings, how it fixed and any symptoms, how he feels with times. Look for patterns to find what is causing his issues.

I think you should consider getting some second opinions.  Perhaps push for a GI consult.  A 14 year old should not have acid reflux which could be due to so many things.

If you suspect celiac disease (make sure he was given the entire panel and not just the screening TTG with an IgA deficiency test) and wish to move forward, consider a gluten challenge (under a doctor’s care) during the summer.

I have fibromyalgia and I have the exact same symptoms as your son. I've been tested for everything. The only thing that helps me is being on a strict organic diet. My body simply cannot handle the insecticides and junk in our food. Fragrances and chemicals in household products and personal hygiene stuff doesn't help either.

I can eat non-organic fruits and veggies, but any animal product and anything with wheat, corn, or soy will set me off with a serious migraine. I still have to take priolosec for the acid reflux, but it's a lot better than it used to be. Sugar can also cause problems if its from sugar beats, as those are GMO and doused with extra chemicals as well. I do alright sticking to pure cane sugar though.

One other thing, some organic brands seem to have inferior products. I had to try three different brands of organic peanut butter before I found one that didn't make me sick (Laura Scudders brand). Hope that helps, I'll be praying for ya'll.

@Scatterbrain, Thiamine Vitamin B1 and amino acid Taurine work together.  Our bodies can make Taurine from meats consumed.  Our bodies cannot make Thiamine and must consume thiamine from food.  Meat is the best source of B vitamins like Thiamine.   Vegetarians may not make sufficient taurine since they don't eat meat sources of taurine.  Seaweed is the best vegetarian source of taurine. Vegetarians may not consume sufficient Thiamine since few veggies are good sources.  Whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds contain thiamine.  Many of these sources can be hard to digest and absorb for people with Celiac disease.   You may find taking the forms of thiamine called Benfotiamine or TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) and a B Complex will give the benefits you're looking for better than taurine alone.

@Jmartes71, I went to Doterra's site and had a look around.  The Doterra TerraZyme supplement really jumped out at me.  Since we, as Celiacs, often have digestive problems, I looked at the ingredients.  The majority of the enzymes in this supplement are made using black mold, Aspergillus!  Other enzymes are made by yeast Saccharomyces!  Considering the fact that Celiac often have permeable intestines (leaky gut syndrome), I would be very hesitant to take a product like this.  Although there may not be live black mold or yeast in the product, the enzymes may still cause an immune system response which would definitely cause inflammation throughout the body.   Skin, eyes, and intestines are all made from the same basic type of cells.  Your skin on the outside and eyes can reflect how irritated the intestines are on the inside.  Our skin, eyes, and intestines all need the same vitamins and nutrients to be healthy:  Vitamin A, Niacin B3 and Tryptophan, Riboflavin B2, Biotin B7, Vitamin C, and Omega Threes.  Remember that the eight B vitamins work together.  Just taking high doses of just one, vitamin like B12, can cause a deficiency in the others.  Taking high doses of B12 can mask a Folate B9 deficiency.  If you take B12, please take a B Complex, too.  Thiamine B1 can be taken in high doses safely without toxicity.  Thiamine is needed by itself to produce energy so every cell in the body can function, but Thiamine also works with the other B vitamins to make life sustaining enzymes and digestive enzymes.  Deficiencies in either Niacin, Vitamin C, or Thiamine can cause digestive problems resulting in Pellagra, Scurvy, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi.   If you change your diet, you will change your intestinal microbiome.  Following the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, a Paleo diet, will starve out SIBO bacteria.  Thiamine keeps bacteria in check so they don't get out of control as in SIBO.  Thiamine also keeps MOLDS and Yeasts from overgrowth.   Menopause symptoms and menstrual irregularities are symptomatic of low Vitamin D.   Doctors are not as knowledgeable about malnutrition as we need them to be.  A nutritionist or dietician would be more helpful.   Take control of your diet and nutrition.  Quit looking for a pill that's going to make you feel better overnight.  The Celiac journey is a marathon, not a sprint.   "Let food be your medicine, and let medicine be your food."

The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

Anyone experimented with Taurine supplementation either via electrolyte powders or otherwise? Thanks
