Hi Everybody!

How are all you ladies doing? I was wondering if any of you had a hard time gaining enough weight while pregnant....My doctor hasn't said anything about it yet, but I was just reading online that by now (18 weeks) I should have gained 5 to 10 pounds. I have only gained 3! :o I don't know what else to do to gain....I eat 3 meals a day and try to eat the healthiest I can, but apparently it just isn't happening. I have thought that maybe it was due to that my diet is naturally low in carbs since I'm gluten free.....but I don't know. My next Dr. appt is in a week and I am going to talk to him about it then, but in the mean time, have any of you had a similar experience?

No personal advice, but a friend who was diagnosed celiac in between child one and two found that she didn't put anything like the same weight on in the early part of the pregnancy when eating gluten-free, but did put more on in the later part, so ended up almost the same over all. But she said she felt much better, and lost the extra much faster with the second, gluten-free pregnancy.

I'm running into the same problem myself I'm aprox. 14 weeks along and I havent gained a pound and the 5 months before I got pregnant I lost a total of thirty pounds. I've been told the baby is taking all my nutrients right now but if that was true wouldnt the baby be gaining weight meaning I would be gaining weight... I only started the gluten-free diet a month if that before I found out I was pregnant. I've been doing lots of research so if I find out anything to help you as well as myself I'll let you know...

By 18 weeks I had gained maybe 5lbs. don't worry - I am now 30 weeks & have gained 25lbs total. All of a sudden it just "packed on". Just keep eating enough & healthy. You'll be just fine.

I would say as long as you're eating enough not to worry about it. Everyone is different, and your body knows what to do. I've been filling out but the scale is not showing it. I'm about 15 weeks, and I've gained probably 6 or 7 pounds (5 of it right away). But I didn't gain any weight with my first one (not gluten-free) until 16 weeks. I lost 10 pounds up until then. And I had a perfect, 9 pound baby. I'm sure it'll come on the second part of the pregnancy.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
