Bowel Movements Worsening After 2 Weeks gluten-free

The last year has been frustrating and confusing to say the least. Three different doctors gave me three different dx's and advice based on those dx's (two of them said I can eat gluten, just "not too much"). So after getting my gene test back right before the Holidays showing I have HLA-DQ2 to go along with my high level of anti-gliadin antibodies, I've decided to try a gluten-free diet again. After two weeks my usual symptoms are the same - sometimes dizzy, brain fog episodes, forgetfulness, hot then cold hands, hungry all the time, headaches after I eat, terrible dry eyes, tired all the time... but my bowel movements have worsened. My diet is very clean. No coffee, sodas, candy, sugar. Lots of fresh fruits, salad and veggie with my main dinner including plain chicken or meat. So what is going on? Why would my diarrhea be getting worse if the gluten was removed?

Oh yeah, and I'm casein-free too. Dairy gives me wicked stomach aches.

Many people find that their symptoms get worse before getting better after they go gluten free. I'd give it a bit more time. When I first went gluten free, I felt like I could have slept all day, and I was hungry all the time. I hope you start to feel better soon!

I initially had been getting better but this past week has been horrendous with n, v, d.. same symptoms all over again. I have been very careful.

Maybe Pauline is right - you have to get better before you get worse? Anyway, it cannot be any worse than what it was in the past, right? I mean, now you know what you have and you can go from there...

PUTTING ALOT OF FRESH FRUIT, SALADS AND VEGGIES INTO ONES DIET ALL OF A SUDDEN CAN GIVE SOMEONE DIARRHEA UNTIL THE BODY ADJUST TO IT. I KNOW THAT HAPPENED TO ME IN THE PAST.

Think of all the years worth of gluten in your body. It has to clean out first so your body has to adjust to no gluten and flush the rest out. I get little bouts of that still but I have only been gluten-free for slightly over a month and if I get a slight accidental glutening it is like I am back at square one.

I have the same issue. I must have had 15 BM's in the last 24 hours. :\ My diet is so squeaky clean. I'm going to try the SCD (specific carbohydrate diet) and see if that helps.

I realize this isn't funny - I have experienced the same thing.

I have this mental picture of this little 'Immune System guy" who is looking around for some gluten to attack and not finding ending thinks - "Oh gee, now I can go afterl all those other things I didn't have time for before!!!!!!!!

Unidentified reactive foods may still be an issue. I know that to be true for me. Claire

I know it is extremely frustrating, but I would give it some more time. This is a pretty big adjustment for your body and you are not going to feel perfect right away. But no matter how much u restrict your diet, it may not help until ur body has taken the time it needs. In my opinion, you could decide to live on one food for the next month and it would probably still make u sick about 1/2 the time. B/c your body needs the time to heal. I've been gluten-free for 7 months now and i am feeling really good now and can eat anything but gluten. But everyone's body is different - it could take 3 days, 3 months, a year, or more. For your sake i hope its sooner rather than later :)

      @catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten.       I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

      good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.

      I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

      What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks
