I was getting my hair cut/colored and my hair guy was asking if I had tried a new sub that a local restaurant carries...I told him that I couldn't eat bread and went on about Celiac/gluten intolerance a little and the hair dresser guy in the next booth came running over and said "HEY! Do you have Celiac?" LOL!! Apparently his brother does and was very sick...diagnosed with Crohn's, even had surgery, then found out it was Celiac.

Wow! It is a small world...I have met quite a few other Celiacs that way. Found out at a Christmas party a sibling of a good friend has a daughter just diagnosed. Am going to connect with her. Crazy!

I was just talking to a co-worker this morning and I said I had celiac and she said that her sister just put her autistic son on a gluten-free CF diet!

I sent her the huge survival kit (thanks nini) to pass on to her sister, who is a bit overwhelmed, esp since her other child has downs

Thats ditto for me, besides my mother having it, I have met so many people that have it or know someone that does. Before my moms dx 2 yrs ago, i didnt even know what celiac was.

Then i went to get me hair cut and was explaining to them why i cant use this and that shampoo and they were like oh yah, another girl that comes here has the same thing and brings her own stuff.

Then my bf's started having his own run ins...one of the supermarkets he owns, the manager was really happy that he was bringing in all this new gluten-free food, then he explained that his wife has it.

Then one of his brokers girl friend was just Dx with it after me.

Then a random guy walked into his store and asked him if he carried gluten-free stuff cause he also has it. (and he constantly gets emails asking what and if they carry gluten-free stuff.

Then I learned that a friend of mine from church his mother has it.

Its like everywhere i go now, someone has it or knows someone that does!

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
