Pure Oats

Hello All

I've been feeling really bloated, sore stomach, IBS like symptoms over the last couple of weeks and discovered that I had confused my usual loaf of bread was replaced with one made with pure oat flour. Since my DX in 2013 I've tried pure oats every few months and have concluded that unfortunately I'm just one of those coeliacs that can't eat the pure ones.  Very upsetting as pre-diagnosis I ate them all the time and they never caused any problems.

I just wondered if there is a pure oats expert there as I can't seem to find any info on the following:

  • Can pure oats (to susceptible coeliacs) cause Iga/TTg numbers to rise?
  • Do they cause villus blunting?

Thanks!

Cristiana

This paper doesn’t look at IgA/TTG, but does look at biopsies and says that oats can affect villi in sensitive people.

Thank you RMJ - as my symptoms are so similar to a reaction to gluten I have suspected this for some time but this is the only place I have seen anything written about it.   I'm very grateful for your taking the time to reply.  Interestingly the store where I purchased this loaf do list oats in bold text in their ingredients list - which is what they do with other grains that can set off a reaction - so it is my fault I missed it.

Your response on this matter is what I expect. You’ve had a similar episode years ago, but this one is lasting longer!

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?
