CBD Oil

Recently started using CBD oil, just in tincture form. Been helping out with anxiety and insomnia but I read something today that it could be glutenous if its processed on shared lines and, ironically, its been causing me anxiety.

Reached out to MedTerra who I purchased from any got this prompt response:

Thanks for reaching out! Although our products do not have any ingredients that contain gluten, we cannot guarantee that the products were not manufactured using machines that may have also been used to manufacture products that do contain gluten. Therefore, if it is dangerous for you to consume any amount of gluten, you may not want to risk using our products.

Not sure if this is legal CYOA or what. Since CBD oil is barely regulated and a lot of the companies are shady to begin with (thanks to the lack of regulation) I'm not sure if any actually "gluten free" brands are worth their salt. MedTerra goes through a lot to test their purity so its ironic to me that they don't test for gluten. Ingredients are just CBD and MCT carrier oil derived from coconuts so its hard to imagine them containing high levels of gluten, especially given the a) focus on purity and b) minimal processing compared to pills, edibles, or cosmetics. Its further complicated by the fact that CBD oil can cause stomach issues while also ameliorating the pain and GI inflammation that come with celiac. I started a dose on Wednesday. My stomach was disagreeable on Thursday but only after dinner and about 22 hours after the dose. No pain or other symptoms, so its likely a false alarm and dinner just didn't sit well. Taking some CBD oil after I got sick actually helped settle my stomach ironically enough. Of course, I'm leery of invisible damage occurring.

Just wondering everyone's thoughts on whether or not this stuff is safe? Does anyone have experience with MedTerra or other brands not explicitly advertised as gluten free, or is it worth finding a bona fide gluten free brand? From a few hours of anxiety-induced research it looks like a lot of celiacs rely on CBD oil, but there aren't many discussions of whether or not its safe. Those discussions that do exist are usually from vendors trying to hawk their wares...

I can't think of a reason that CBD oil would contain any gluten, but then again, there are 100's of foods that shouldn't contain hidden gluten, but do. I suppose they could put cheaper wheat germ oil in it to be more profitable by diluting the product. I do think many celiac could benefit from using CBD oil, as it has many benefits, especially for those whose celiac symptoms include arthritic pain.

Yeah it did good for my anxiety for the 2 days where I was using it. I did end up getting glutened by its possible it could have been something else (I ate mushrooms over the weekend, usually have good luck with them).

Any brands that are safe?

You would likely need to look at their web pages, and perhaps ask them directly, but again, I'm not sure why gluten might be added to them.

Here is more info about how to do a gluten challenge for a celiac disease blood panel, or for an endoscopy: and this recent study recommends 4-6 slices of wheat bread per day:

Your feelings are completely valid, and I want to commend you for advocating for yourself despite the initial resistance from your doctor. Navigating a new celiac diagnosis can feel overwhelming, especially when you're adjusting to such a big lifestyle change. It’s natural to grieve the loss of your old eating habits and to feel frustrated by the constant label-reading and vigilance required. But please know that you are not alone, and many others have walked this path and come out stronger on the other side. Healing takes time, and while the brain fog, fatigue, and bowel symptoms can be discouraging, they often improve as your body begins to recover. It’s great that you’ve hired a dietitian—that’s a big step in supporting your healing journey and ensuring you’re getting the nutrients your body needs to rebuild. Remember, each small step you take is progress, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. It’s okay to feel sad and angry, but also try to give yourself credit for your strength in facing this. The fact that you pushed for answers shows how resilient you are. While the road ahead may have challenges, many people find that over time, they feel better than they ever imagined possible once their gut begins to heal. You’ve got this, and the celiac community is here to support you every step of the way. If you have time, this book was published on Celiac.com's and you might find it helpful: Also, this article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):

Welcome to the forum, @Whyz! By "half way to being diagnosed" I assume you mean you have had the blood antibody testing done but not the gastroscopy with biopsy. Is this correct? Were the results of your blood work positive for celiac disease?
    • trents
Three days of no gluten is not likely to have much impact on serum antibody test results. I have more concern over exactly what test or tests were ordered. When you get the results back, please post them including the reference ranges for the tests for negative vs. positive. What country are you in? Do you have much choice in what doctors you see? Sounds like it might be a good idea to seek out another physician who knows what they are doing in this area of disease diagnosis. At any rate, you have the link I shared above outlining the various tests that can be run so that might be a resource you could share with a physician.
