I didn’t have a bad reaction!?

Hey everyone! I just had a really weird experience. So, I’ve been diagnosed Celiac for 5 years. I was highly symptomatic before diagnosis (constant stomach issues, joint pain). Since quitting gluten, I’ve had a few accidental encounters (a little barley in soup etc.) that resulted in severe burning pain. I also often have a few weeks at a time with general digestive issues that I think could be caused by accidental glutening. I always tell people that I react severely because I always have.

So, I just found out that a few days ago I had 2 (maybe 3) little balls of gluten-filled cookie dough. I thought it was gluten free because it was next to a box of gluten free cookie dough. I can’t remember at all what day I ate them. I can remember one day having a bit of stomach pain and joint pain, and have been more tired and headachy than usual the last few days. Other than that - nothing! No vomiting, diarrhea, intense pain or days of indigestion.

So, what the heck!? Has this ever happened to you... that you just randomly didn’t react as badly to a significant amount of gluten? I know I should be thankful (and I am), but I’m also seriously so confused. I feel also like my family isn’t going to take me as seriously because I didn’t have a bad reaction.

After your gut fully heals, many celiacs, including myself, may have few or even no symptoms if they ingest gluten. Of course there are those who will have severe symptom with even the smallest amounts, but for those who reach this point I've seen it give some people a false sense of security, and made them lower their guard regarding their strict gluten-free diet. I would chalk it up to maybe being in this lucky group, but would not lower your guard and would stay vigilant with your diet.

That’s interesting! The last time I definitely got glutened was about a year ago and the reaction was severe for a small amount. Is it possible I’ll react badly sometimes and other times not?

Regardless, I’ll continue to be careful... the pain I had this time around (which not as bad as I would expect) was bad enough to motivate me to steer clear.

I think reactions can vary, but it sounds to me like yours may be decreasing over time because you've been gluten-free, and your gut has likely fully healed.

Welcome to the forum, @LookingForAnswers101, I had similar experiences with boil outbreaks in the same areas.  Mine was caused by Candida Albicans and eating a diet too high in sugar and simple carbohydrates.   Candida is a yeast infection, so the antibacterial wash is not going to help.  I had to change my diet to a Paleo diet before it went away.  If I consume high levels of sugar or other simple carbohydrates (rice, corn, dairy, etc.), boils would occur at pressure points like the groin and back of the legs.  Your doctor might be able to prescribe an antifungal medication, but some of those antifungal medications destroy thiamine.  Thiamine is needed to keep fungal and bacterial infections in check.  I took Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine, but TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) will work, too.   Thiamine, and the other B vitamins, especially Niacin and Biotin, along with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D will help keep skin healthy.  Be sure to address these nutritional deficiencies that occur with Celiac! Ask your doctor to rule out autoimmune hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and Human Papilloma virus, too.   Hang in there!  You'll get over this rocky patch of the journey!  Best wishes!

As I mentioned, gluten intolerance encompasses more than just those with celiac disease, and in the past was used more like the term "gluten sensitivity" is used today.

By the way, have you been diagnosed with celiac disease, and if so, are you on a 100% gluten-free diet?

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.
