Hi,

I had an endoscopy. Received results via MyChart. I’m going to have bloodwork done tomorrow. Do I have Celiac?

‘findings are not diagnostic, however raise the possibility of gluten sensible enterathopy.’

dueodenum biopsy-small intestinal mucosa with mild focal villous blunting and focal, slightly increased intraepithial lymphocytes.

thanks!

Those findings can definitely be found with celiac disease, although they’re usually more severe.  It could be celiac disease that hasn’t gotten really bad yet, or celiac disease that is partially healed.

How much gluten were you eating in the month prior to the endoscopy?

You should be eating gluten regularly for 6-8 weeks prior to blood work. Do you know exactly what blood tests were ordered?  Some doctors only order the tests that look for TTG IgA and IgG antibodies, but some with celiac disease are only positive on DGP antibodies.

Usually, the blood work is done first since it is non invasive and cost efficient.

As RMJ said, 6-8 weeks of consuming gluten daily in the amount equivalent to two pieces of wheat bread.

Nobody mentioned eating the gluten before tests. I’ve not been gluten free. I don’t normally eat much just as part of diet. Thanks for reply.

Par for the course. Most physicians don't know any better. They are not knowledgeable about celiac disease.

I ended up getting the blood tests   TTG IgA and IgG. Tranglutaminase AB IgA high positive at 123. Celiac Diagnosis 9/22/21. So I’ve cut gluten and I saw nutrition yesterday. I’ve been ready a lot. Gastro follow up at end of month.

Well, your doctors did things backwards from how testing is usually done in the sense of doing the blood antibody tests after the endoscopy/biopsy but the outcome is what matters. Now comes the educational challenge of learning where and how gluten is hidden so as to be able to consistently avoid it.

I was having stomach issues so they just happened to find. And yes, this is definitely a challenge. I like this group.
thanks for the info.

Congratulations on significantly lower tTG IgA results!

You only posted the tTG results before.  Have you had the Gliadin Ab IgA tested before?  If not, maybe it was really high, unknown to you, and this is a lot lower! My tTG results normalized before my deamidated gliadin peptide results.

It look like they only ran the igg test previously but that’s a good point. I’ll look at it positively and keep going.

I was at 12 from over 100 after 5 months.    So it looks similar to my drop around the same time.

You might see it drop very slowly now though.  Cutting out huge amounts of gluten will make it drop by a lot quickly in the beginning...  towards the end it might be harder to get it to drop if you're still eating tiny amounts of gluten regularly.

Were your Liver enzymes tested ?   AST ALT ?   If not they should be.

Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.
