Does celiac disease/Gluten Consumption Cause Menstrual Issues?

Can gluten consumption in celiac disease or NCGS cause menstrual issues? My hormones have been a mess recently. I take birth control pills daily and have for years. I was consuming something with gluten daily for a month or so without realizing it. I was also taking digestive enzymes after I realized my mistakE thinking it would help.  I am about 2.5 weeks out since getting back to the gluten free lifestyle. I was really sick and was having lots of issues and symptoms from head to toe basically and have been exhausted. I noticed my hormones felt out of whack (irritable and extra sensitive and crying easily) and then I started having a lot of lower abdominal cramps but couldn’t tell if they were intestinal or girl issues, but I’ve ended up dealing with my period early. So I’m really wondering if there is a connection between the gluten and hormonal / menstrual issue here. Thanks

We have had many posters on this forum report that gluten consumption adversely affects their menstruation. And I'm sure it's one of the complications I have seen in the lists of health problems associated with celiac disease. Have you googled it?

Thank you. I have not googled it, and I tried to search on this forum but was unsuccessful finding any posts.

On the forum, try alternate terminology like "period" or "monthly period" or "menses".

Will do, thanks! I’ll google when I have some free time to read as well

Deficiencies in Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and Thiamine can affect one's period.

As I mentioned, gluten intolerance encompasses more than just those with celiac disease, and in the past was used more like the term "gluten sensitivity" is used today.

By the way, have you been diagnosed with celiac disease, and if so, are you on a 100% gluten-free diet?

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

@plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.
