Anyone have severe muscle spasms (cramps) when stretching?

Every month is a new symptom for me. The last couple of months have been excruciating muscle spasms when I stretch my legs. You know how you just want to raise your arms up in the air and then stretch your entire body. It should feel awesome but if I am not careful and I stretch my legs, I will get these unbearable spasms in my calves, thighs or feet that I am sure will be the death of me. I truly cannot move when they occur but thank goodness they do not last long. Then the muscle that tensed up is painfully sore for a day or two. When I look it up they are common and there is no cure and apparently no cause for alarm. I know my death certificate is going to read "death as a result of a muscle spasm- RIP". Just wondering if it is celiac related, vitamin deficiency related, etc. Or, something new to live with. I see a doctor in a few weeks but I thought I would throw the topic out there and see if anyone literally shares my pain. Had one last night and I thought OK this is it!

It definitely sounds like a nutrient deficiency to me, possibly low magnesium. Are you taking a good multi-vitamin/minerals? You might try getting some magnesium citrate (Costco) and taking it with food. Note that your body may need to adjust to it, as it can cause IBS symptoms in some people, but usually it goes away after you get used to it.

I have been having muscle cramps at night and especially in the morning if I stretch before getting out of bed.  I tried taking magnesium and it did help quite a bit but made diarrhea worse.

JD New Et al,

Magnesium in the right form will help with Cramping....

I will have to be brief tonight.....because my time is limited these days but I will give you the resources to help yourself do the research.

Magnesium Cirates can cause the Magnesium Flushing Katerific mentioned......Magnesium Glycinate will not....

Here is the research on Magnesium and Muscle Cramps entitled "Muscle cramps and magnesium deficiency: case reports"

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8754704/

Muscle spasms is one of the 7 Classic Signs of a Magnesium deficiency.....there are many more than that though.....we are said to "Waste Away" without enough Magnesium.

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/magnesium-deficiency-symptoms

Here is the best article I have ever read on the many types of Magnesium and which is the best form to take......and It is important to take a highly bioavailable form......if you want Magnesium to help your cramps....

https://www.dietvsdisease.org/best-magnesium-supplement/

It will explain most (to all) of your questions.....

But JD New since you are specifically complaining of Cramps.....I would run not,......walk and find you the "Natural Calm" form......a powdered Ionic Magnesium Citrate form and start with "Half a Teaspoon size" and dose to tolerance (as Ennis_Tx likes to say)......

Anything more than a Half teaspoon to start could cause the Magnesium flushing.......mitigated (somewhat) when taken with food.....that Katerific mentions....(and especially if you take  Magnesium Citrate (as an Ionic Powder) on a empty stomach especially......so don't start the Magnesium "Natural Calm" form at night until you know how it will affect you.....

Magnesium Glycinates is the best form to take at night......because Magnesium Glycinate will not flush the way esp. the Powdered and/or Liquid forms (used as a Colon Cleanse) can.....etc.

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice.

I have been you!  Taken properly Magnesium will quell your Cramps (almost as by magic)......but it isn't.....It is just the body needs magnesium to trigger your Muscles to release/relax and without some Magnesium the body can't relax the Muscle and then the "Charlie Horse" from HELL forms!

2 Timothy 2: 7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included.

Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes

We feel your pain. It took me 20+ years of regularly going to doctors desperate for answers only to be told there was nothing wrong with me … when I was 20 pounds underweight, suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies, and in a great deal of pain. I had to figure it out for myself. If you're in the U.S., not having an official diagnosis does mean you can't claim a tax deduction for the extra expense of gluten-free foods. But it can also be a good thing. Pre-existing conditions might be a reason why a health insurance company might reject your application or charge you more money. No official diagnosis means you don't have a pre-existing condition. I really hope you don't live in the U.S. and don't have these challenges. Do you need an official diagnosis for a specific reason? Else, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're diligent in remaining gluten free, your body should be healing as much as possible so there isn't much else you could do anyway. And there are plenty of us out here who never got that official diagnosis because we couldn't eat enough gluten to get tested. Now that the IL-2 test is available, I suppose I could take it, but I don't feel the need. Someone else not believing me really isn't my problem as long as I can stay in control of my own food.

If you're just starting out in being gluten free, I would expect it to take months before you learned enough about hidden sources of gluten before you stopped making major mistakes. Ice cream? Not safe unless they say it is gluten free. Spaghetti sauce? Not safe unless is says gluten-free. Natural ingredients? Who knows what's in there. You pretty much need to cook with whole ingredients yourself to avoid it completely. Most gluten-free products should be safe, but while you're in the hypersensitive phase right after going gluten free, you may notice that when something like a microwave meal seems to not be gluten-free … then you find out that it is produced in a shared facility where it can become contaminated. My reactions were much-more severe after going gluten free. The analogy that I use is that you had a whole army of soldiers waiting for some gluten to attack, and now that you took away their target, when the stragglers from the gluten army accidentally wander onto the battlefield, you still have your entire army going out and attacking them. Expect it to take two years before all of the training facilities that were producing your soldiers have fallen into disrepair and are no longer producing soldiers. But that is two years after you stop accidentally glutening yourself. Every time you do eat gluten, another training facility can be built and more soldiers will be waiting to attack. Good luck figuring things out.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/
