Mathew, I think the cold sweats comes with vomiting caused by anything, not just gluten. I think that is natural.

For much of my life, despite having a mom with very severe celiac disease (she found out what she had when I was 17), I always thought my digestive issues were due to dairy.  I had dairy problems from infancy, and have not really liked to eat much dairy my entire life, I instinctively avoided it.  My mom was violently sick any time she got an accidental exposure, and I remember had horribly sick she had been when I was young, before her diagnosis.  I wasn't like that, so I figured I had escaped the celiac curse and my problem was dairy.  I didn't get diagnosed celiac until 2009 when I was 60, but I also tested (Enterolab) highly sensitive to the dairy protein casein.  I was strictly gluten-free from about 2009 to 2011, and also mostly eliminated dairy as well, and I do best with of course no gluten and also no dairy.  So I stayed "mostly" gluten-free since 2011, but got  lax with eating gluten in about 2019 to 2020, and I got increasingly sicker with odd things I won't go into here, but I got it together again in early 2021 and have been strictly gluten-free for  over 2 years now.  As for dairy, I mostly avoid it but found after a year of no dairy that I could allow back a tiny bit....for me, that's in my daily cappuccino (I have a machine to make my own) in which I steam whip half and half to put in the coffee.  I measured to find out how much is in each daily cup, and it's 2 Tablespoons worth.  I do fine with that although occasionally for no reason it will give me a stomach ache.  If I have more than that, I'll have bloating and sometimes a stomach ache and worse.  I couldn't really tolerate 2 cappuccinos in one day, for example.  Ice cream kills me, also yogurt.   So I guess I'd say I can tolerate very small amounts of dairy but never very much.  Reacting to the casein is different from reacting to the lactose part of milk, apparently, at least for me that's true.

Thank you for this i appreciate it. I love dairy and eat it a lot, always have and never normally any issues but im not ruling it out. I had a brew yest with milk and was fine. Im on day 6 of a bad glutening only just managed to get down some scram eggs and beans. Water staying down tho, dyoraytes to replace salts. I need to get an app witj GI asap.

Thank you Trent, appreciate the reassurance 🙏

I also could not tolerate cow's milk when I was diagnosed, but after a couple of years could.

I get VIOLENT vomiting and diarrhea. The cold sweats are brain-numbing. The nausea is unbearable. Lasts about 20 hours. Checked myself into ER last time it happened and I was in sepsis! It’s happened 6 times in last two years. I am still waiting on final diagnosis but all signs are pointing to celiac currently. It is the worst thing I have ever experienced. I thought I was going to die.

Have u been tested? Im going straight to e.r next time. This has lasted nearly 5 days

Sepsis? That is the body's extreme response to an infection that has gotten into the blood and gone systemic. What was the source of this infection? I assume it was a GI infection of some kind?

When was last time you had your b12 checked?

Vitamin B12 deficiency is common. It is known to cause a wide spectrum of neurological syndromes, including autonomic dysfunction. Three cases are discussed here in which drenching night sweats were thought to be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. All three responded dramatically to vitamin B12 therapy.

Do some research on the best formulations of B12, the ones that are assimilated the best. Not all B12 supplements are created equal: https://perniciousanemia.org/b12/forms/

I feel for you, as my reaction to even a little cross contamination is an attack that acts like the worst stomach virus ever---sweats, chills, severe vomiting and diarrhea that lasts anywhere from an hour to several hours.  Twice, it was so bad that I almost called 911 due to extreme weakness, but, thankfully, it did stop.  It makes me more nervous about going to places like weddings, dinners out at new restaurants, taking road trips, etc....always concerned that I'll end up trapped in a public restroom having the attack.  Wish medical folks could come up with a miracle cure.

Aw mate i know its awful. I was just away in the highlands 8 hours from home. Spent the week shivering and throwing up, luckcily there was a log fire and unkin hot baths on hand. Worst week of my life. What do u take if anything when it happens  i have an anti sick tablet and when i can keep it down, some paracetamol. My most recent flare took nearly 5 days to recover. Maybe longer if u include the burning calf pain and numb thighe. Ive had b12 checked should get results next couple days. I wish u good luck mate

You didn't eat the haggis did you? The Jocks put anything in that - roadkill, dead climbers, asbestos.

For me, the worst part is the neurological symptoms. When I have been glutened, I get anxiety, confusion and memory problems. It comes on over a day or so and fades over several weeks. I get gastrointestinal symptoms - reflux, burping and fatty stools but no vomiting. I just cannot function. I got badly glutened a couple of times in Sweden, and it has made me very anxious about eating out. The UK is much safer than Scandinavia but still risky. I am planning a summer holiday in Italy, which is supposed to be excellent for people with coeliac disease.

I also hear that mate. I got sick last sunday, not the one just gone. And im still woozy, tired and so angry and everyone around me. I can watch myself be a bastard. But struggle to stop. Not nice

I used to get crazy vertigo sensations, as if I were standing on the edge of a tall building, which triggered panic attacks, and I also ended up in the ER several times before I was finally diagnosed.

I thought I was losing my mind. Pretty much back to normal now. Also, I began to get eye wobbles and had mild balance and coordination problems. I am a cyclist - I used to race when I was young. I can still do a track stand but I could feel how my balance was going. Luckily it has come back.

This happened to me as well. What’s weirder is that within a couple hours of taking paxlovid it subsided. I thought maybe I got glutened but after reading your post not so sure.

Hi Tiffany. Thank you for writing your dituation and  circumstancesin such detail and so well writte, too. I particularly noticed what you wrote about brain for and feeling like your brain is swelling and I know from my own experiences that's how it feel and your brain really does swell and you get migraines.    Way back when I was in my 20s I read a book by 2 MD allergist and they described their patient who came in complaining that her brain, inside her cranium, was swelling  and it happened when she smelled a certain chemical she used in her home. She kept coming back and insisting her brain actually swelled in her head. The Drs couldn't explain this problem so they, with her permission, performed an operation where they made a small opening through her cranium, exposed her to the chemical then watched as she brain did swell into the opening. The DRs were amazed but then were able to advise her to avoid chemicals that made her brain swell. I remember that because I occasionally had brain fog then but it was not a serious problem. I also realized that I was becoming more sensitive to chemicals I used in my work in medical laboratories. By my mid forties the brain fog and chemicals forced me to leave my  profession and move to a rural area with little pollution. I did not have migraines. I was told a little later that I had a more porous blood brain barrier than other people. Chemicals in the air would go up into my sinused and leak through the blood brain barrier into my brain. We have 2 arteries  in our neck that carry blood with the nutrients and oxygen into the brain. To remove the fluids and used blood from the brain there are only capillaries and no large veins to carry it away so all those fluids ooze out much more slowly than they came in and since the small capillaries can't take care of extra fluid it results in swelling in the face, especially around the eyes. My blood flow into my brain is different from most other people as I have an arterial ischema, adefectiveartery on one side.   I have to go forward about 20 or more years when I learned that I had glaucoma, an eye problem that causes blindness and more years until I learned I had celiac disease.  The eye Dr described my glaucoma as a very slow loss of vision that I wouldn't  notice until had noticeable loss of sight.  I could have my eye pressure checked regularly or it would be best to have the cataracts removed from both eyes. I kept putting off the surgery then just overnight lost most of the vision in my left eye. I thought at the I had been exposed to some chemical and found out a little later the person who livedbehind me was using some chemicals to build kayaks in a shed behind my house. I did not realize the signifance  of this until I started having appointments with a Dr. in a new building. New buildings give me brain fog, loss of balance and other problems I know about this time I experienced visual disturbances very similar to those experienced by people with migraines. I looked further online and read that people with glaucoma can suffer rapid loss of sight if they have silent migraines (no headache). The remedy for migraines is to identify and avoid the triggers. I already know most of my triggers - aromatic chemicals, some cleaning materials, gasoline and exhaust and mold toxins. I am very careful about using cleaning agents using mostly borax and baking powder. Anything that has any fragrance or smell I avoid. There is one brand of dishwashing detergent that I can use and several brands of  scouring powder. I hope you find some of this helpful and useful. I have not seen any evidence that Celiac Disease is involved with migraines or glaucoma. Please come back if you have questions or if what I wrote doesn't make senseto you. We sometimes haveto learn by experience and finding out why we have some problems. Take care.       The report did not mention migraines.

Hi Jmartes71 That is so much like my story! You probably know where Laytonville is and that's where I was living just before my 60th birthday when the new Dr. suggested I could have Celiacs. I didn't go on a gluten challange diet before having the Celiac panel blood test drawn. The results came back as equivical as one antibody level was very high but another, tissue transaminasewas normal. Itdid show I was  allergic to cows milk and I think hot peppers. I immediately went gluten free but did not go in for an endoscopy. I found an online lab online that would do the test to show if I had a main celiac gene (enterolab.com). The report came back that I had inherited a main celiac gene, DQ8, from one parent and a D!6 from the other parent. That combination is knows to sym[tons of celiac worse than just inheriting one main celiac gene. With my version of celiac disease I was mostly constipated but after going gluten-free I would have diarrhea the few times I was glutened either by cross contamination or eating some food containing gluten. I have stayed gluten-free for almost 20 years now and knew within a few days that it was right for me although my recovery has been slow.   When I go to see a  medical provide and tell them I have celiacs they don't believe me. The same when I tell them that I carry a main celiac gene, the DQ8. It is only when I tell them that I get diarrhea after eating gluten that they realize that I might have celiac disease. Then they will order th Vitamin B12 and D3 that I need to monitor as my B12 levels can go down very fast if I'm not taking enough of it. Medical providers haven't been much help in my recovery. They are not well trained in this problem. I really hope this helps ypu. Take care.
