Those of you on gluten free diet, did you initially see a dietician/nutritionist? 

If I have to go on one my doctor will make referral to a dietician.  Problem with that, for me, I am on medicare and they do not cover dietitians for celiac / gluten free.  They only cover for diabetes and kidney.   Looks like it will be an out of pocket expense for ppl on medicare.

If you have part C yours may cover it as prediabetes, obesity or something like that. Looks like these acts in congress are hung up and going to languish and die in committees. Medical Nutrition Therapy Act of 2021

 On May 10, 2021, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) introduced bipartisan legislation, S.1536, to expand Medicare beneficiaries’ access to Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT), which is a cost-effective component of treatment for celiac disease, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and other chronic conditions.

On May 11 of this year, U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly (D-IL) and Fred Upton (R-MI) introduced a companion bill, H.R.3108, in the House of Representatives.

The Medical Nutrition Therapy Act of 2021 would expand Medicare Part B coverage of outpatient medical nutrition therapy services to a number of currently uncovered diseases or conditions—including celiac disease, prediabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, malnutrition, eating disorders, cancer, and HIV/AIDS.

No, I never saw a nutritionalist. I really don't see a need for that for most celiacs. This might be just as helpful:

And taking some gluten free supplements to address the nutritional deficiencies in vitamins and minerals (especially B vitamins, D3 and magnesium) would be wise as well.

I saw one after a few years because I couldn’t get my DGP IgA down to normal range.  I got some suggestions that didn’t help, and finally figured it out on my own.

Thanks Wheatwacked,  trents, RMJ for the info and resources.  I figure with all the sources out there on the net one can go it alone but sometimes words of advice are very helpful(such as this forum).

Personally, I would not put a lot of confidence in a dietician/nutritionalist who themselves were not having to personally cope with celiac disease as so many in the medical community are operating on outdated information and very partial knowledge when it comes to celiac disease.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute.
