Alternative Medicine Magazine

When I was in Whole Foods the other day I saw this magazine on their newsrack by the checkout...title was "Alternative Medicine", and it has a big 6 page article about celiac disease! This is the April issue. It's an interesting magazine I hadn't seen before, and the article is good and informative. I guess this isn't a particularly mainstream magazine, though.

They've touched on Celiac previously -

it was how I learned what celiac was before

I was diagnosed, though I didn't know the

extensiveness until I got here!

Thanks Carole--will have to ck that out. Was it about "treatment" ideas or just about the pathology of the disease ?

I felt the article was directed at those who have no idea celiac disease exists. But it was still fairly thorough...lots of sidebars with extra information. Nothing in it I didn't already know, but it would be eye-opening for someone who has no idea about it....and there's enough info to perhaps raise red flags with their own puzzling symptoms. I would still like to have seen it delve into more detail about the difficulty in testing. It was still pretty mainstream in terms of information. Oh well, something is better than nothing! <_<

For those who are having trouble with friends and family clueing into what we go through. They could photocopy the article and give it to them to read Maybe then people will begin to see what a small amount could do to us.

As soon as Chapters gets it in I told them to call me so, I could pick it up.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
