Hi,  I have celiac disease. My cardiologist wants me to start taking a daily aspirin. She wrote a prescription for the aspirin 81 mg and I picked it up from the pharmacy.

Are you concerned that it might not be gluten-free? I also take a low dose aspirin for similar reasons and get the Bayer brand via Costco. This article may be helpful:

I was just wondering if an aspirin is ok to take with celiac disease. I will ask the pharmacist if what I was given is gluten free.  Thank you for your response! I appreciate it.

I guess my real concern is that Aspirin is an NSAID and I didn't think celiacs can take NSAIDS

I suppose if your celiac disease were recently diagnosed, and you might already have issues with intestinal bleeding due to it, your doctor might want you to hold off until that was under full control. I'm not aware of any incompatibility with taking aspirin or other NSAID and celiac disease, especially if it's been recommended by your cardiologist, but it would not hurt for you to run this by them just to be certain.

Some of us can be sensitive to NSAIDs. That can be entirely based on personal experience. My stomach isn’t strong enough to handle them, but I’m able to take them for single use needs. Most often they are gluten free, just ensure which ones you take are. Take them with food, even something as small as a banana will help your stomach. If after a few days or week you notice your digestion or stomach hurting or developing any uncomfortable symptoms, let your doctor know and maybe consider Tylenol.
tylenol doesn’t work as good depending on your need for them, but it won’t hurt your intestinal lining.
hope they work out for you!

Thank you for the input. A daily aspirin was prescribed for heart related issues and family history. I spoke with my cardiologist that prescribed it and she told me not to take it and continue to take fish oil.

BTW, I recommend that you always take the aspirin after you eat, and would do it after dinner. My reasoning for taking it after dinner is due to statistics which show that heart attacks most often occur in the morning. Blood tends to be stickier in the morning, which may increase the likelihood of clot formation in the arteries, a common cause of heart attacks. When people wake up in the morning, they may experience a surge in stress hormones (such as cortisol and adrenaline) as part of the body's natural awakening process. This can also contribute to the risk of heart attacks in susceptible individuals.

Hi and thank you for all of your recommendations. I really appreciate it.

Hi B.J. Trents is correct as I as well use aspirin in the 81mg a day dose for my heart condition CAD aka Coronary Artery Disease as well as 3 other meds prescribed by my Cardiologist as well for the CAD! I am a Celiac of 20+yrs and I am Strictly gluten-free, so like Trents said make sure to read the ingredient label as some manufactures change ingredients often! I have found no issues with Bayer’s 81mg aspirin taken daily! Stay Celiac Strong💪and Heart❤️Strong💪

I was prescribed a low dose aspirin, but after supplementing with Thiamine and the other B vitamins, my health improved.

Whether one is newly diagnosed or living with CeD for years, correcting nutritional deficiencies is terribly important.  Malabsorption of nutrients goes hand in hand with CeD.  Subclinical deficiencies can affect ones health.

Subclinical Thiamine deficiency can manifest as heart problems, depression and anxiety, thyroid problems, digestive system symptoms, and diabetes, among others.

This article finds a link between Thiamine and cardiovascular diseases.

Association of vitamin B1 with cardiovascular diseases, all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in US adults

Talk to your doctors and nutritionist before beginning supplementing.  Thiamine in high doses is safe and nontoxic.  Thiamine and the seven other B vitamins should be supplemented together because they depend on each other to function properly.  Minerals like magnesium and zinc are needed for Thiamine and the B vitamins to work, too.

Hope this helps!

My husband just had shingles going on 7 weeks now. We had been putting Vaseline on the blisters and lidocaine cream and he was prescribed an antiviral.  Also he still has the nerve pain it was bad and is getting better it is his upper left torso. His dr prescribed gabapentin 300mg 3x a day and he's also taking naproxen 500ng 2x a day and tylenol 1000mg every 6 hrs. Hope this helps  The lidocaine cream is by tylenol and is available in a large tube on Amazon or at Walmart

What are your daily meals? Guilty pleasure snacks? Protein bars? I feel when looking for gluten free foods they are filled with sugar cholesterol. Looking for healthy gluten-free protein bars. Something to fill since sometimes I feel like not to eat anything. Especially if on vacation and unsure of cross contamination I figure go with a salad and protein bar to fill and play it safe.

Unfortunately, there is presently no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out. NCGS is thought to be much more common than celiac disease. We know that celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder but the mechanism of NCGS is less clear. Both call for an elimination of gluten from the diet.

Thanks for your reply Trents…most appreciated.  I am unfamiliar with celiac labs terminology so I wanted to know if the presence of HLA variants (DA:101, DA:105, DQB1:0301 and DQB1:0501) that the labs detected had any merit in predisposing one to be more sensitive to gluten/carbs than the general population?  Also,  I found what you said about NCGS very interesting and I appreciate you mentioning that.  I’ve worked hard to research and advocate for myself with my Hematologist and now with a new GI, since my bowel surgery and to maintain my Vitamin B12 health concurrent with keeping my levels of Iron in the optimal range. I’ve been tested for SIBO (do not have it), biopsy showed negative for HPylori, and have had Fecal studies done (nothing showed up) and I understand how a loss of a large amount of bowel could be highly impacting re: SIBO, malabsorption and motility issues. So I’ve managed pretty well diet and elimination-wise until just recently. That said, this new problem with extreme bloating, distention and upper girth, NAFLD just occured over the last 4 months so it is new for me and I thought celiac might be a possible issue. I’ll probably just continue on in this less gluten/carbs seem to be better for me and see how reintroducing certain foods go.  Thanks again.

Thanks bumped it up and now take all 3 vitamins 2 capsules each with the super b complex at breakfast. I will give it some time to see if I notice a difference. I am going to track my eating daily diary on a myfitness pal app to see if the "claimed" gluten free foods bother me or not.
