Glutening symptoms

Hi. Nearly three weeks ago I was glutened. I haven’t done this in a while now. And the symptoms have been pretty awful as you’re all probably aware of. Migraine, pain in neck and shoulders, flu like symptoms, tinnitus, loss of feeling in legs and hands, fatigue, tummy troubles, rashes, brain fog, muscle twitches and lots more. I was expecting to feel a bit better now but I’m still having symptoms nearly three weeks later. I’m flying out on holiday in 2 days and was hoping to be better for that. I’m just wondering if it is normal to last this long for others, and be this intense? I’ve struggled to work and function. I was diagnosed 3 years ago now and can’t remember being this bad for quite some time. Great joy! 😊

Oh and I have MS also and a glutening seems to trigger that too. Numbness in legs. Pins and needles. Struggle to walk etc.Great joy again 😊

It's probably too late for this article, but it may be helpful going forward:

It sounds like you are super sensitive, so recovery could take several weeks.

The best airline to fly is United. I told them I was Celiac and they gave me a bar of crispy chocolate with no dairy. The worst airline is Swiss Air. First off I had broken my wrist in two places and they threw me off the airline. I had go back to a doctor in Luzerne, Switzerland, to get a permit to fly. Now of course, the Swiss are known for their chocolate and it's filled with cows' milk. They are the rudest, most dishonest airline ever. I have been to Switzerland twice now and will never return. I am also a Type I Diabetic and that will kill you if you don't count carbohydrates. The best granola is "Purely Elizabeth." There are no oats, which I can't have and will never eat oatmeal. These are tiny bits of nuts, not peanuts because they are a legume and they off my list. I don't drink beer because of the barley  and whey.

Again, Swiss Air is the worst! I think I lost 20 pounds on that trip along with a broken wrist.

Hope this helps. Dorothy

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
