M&m Meats, Canada

I went to M&M Meats today, the lovely lady there printed off what the head office calls a "gluten-free" list. Well, 95% of that list has gluten in it. They listed lasagne, cheese cake, battered, breaded, etc. I went through drawing lines through so much of it, I had to laugh. But then thinking what if I did not know what I was looking for and I was a brand new day or week old freshie who had never been here. If I had never been to the Celiac association and if I had never had a Celiac Dictionary, I would have been in very big trouble. So, I got some potatoes, vegetables and chicken kabobs. Some stuff they did not have on hand, seasonal, but there is not a lot. There are turkey steaks, don't use the sauce. There Are chicken cutlets but I highly suspect even their ice cream could be a problem.

Wow, they actually think those foods are gluten-free? Good thing that you posted this. That informarion could really confuse people who are new to the gluten-free diet.

Yes, it was actually very scary. I dreaded to think what would have happened to someone who was brand new to this.

Did you call or email the head office? You should let them know that they could be doing some real damage to people unless they get an accurate list.

I have sent them an email. The list is so far from accurate it is scary,

What shocks me is that you would not expect such lack of knowledge from this company. They are such strong supporters of the Crohns and Colitis Foundation.

I e-mailed them months ago and I never got a response.

Same thing with Cold-fX. I e-mailed them three times and no response. I called them and they said their product was safe, but I don't really belive them because I was quite sick. That's why I wanted it in writing.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
