Hi Guys, my mom's 80th Birthday is coming up in a few weeks, i'm planning a party and would like to make a gluten-free/dairy free white cake, one that others will think is a "regular" cake

If you have a tried and true recipe could you please share it?

thanks, Betty

p.s. no bean flours either

Hi Betty--I use The GFP Cake and Cookie mix. It's very good, --I have not had much luck baking a cake from scratch gluten-free. Hopefully, others will have some great recipes, but I just use this and it turns out good every time.

hi patti :D thanks for the tip, I think I may just do that, I have so many other things to plan and getting everyone on board  is stressful enough!

thanks for the birthday wishes for my mom [my rock!] she'll be 80 on the 1st and just joined an exercise class 2 days a week!!

forgot to ask...would I need 2 packages to do a 2 layer cake?

You'll need 2 packages for a 2 layer cake. Bless your mom's heart--joining an excercise class! :D Hope the party preparations go smoothly, and the event is a great success :D

The white cake recipe in the recipe section of this site is excellent. I've made it 3 times and served it to company. Everyone liked it. I used water once and rice milk the other times for the liquid. Twice I added a package of Dr. Oetker's coconut pudding mix to the flour and then increased the liquid by 1/4 cup.

Thanks! I have to tell you that after talking about this cake, I made one today and topped it with homemade chocolate frosting. Just had a piece--so good :P Happy mother's day to you, too--have a good one :D

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
