Craving What Hurts You?

I am curious as I have done a lot of reading on allergies and such and there is a lot of controversy that people crave foods that actually harms them. For instance, a person who loves milk and dairy and can not get enough of it may have a hidden allergy to it. The same may apply for gluten and I was wondering if anyone has found this to be the case for them?

My 4 year old LOVES bread, crackers, and such. If I take a look at what he seems to crave it is all likely to contain gluten.

Just one of those really curious questions.

Yep. I don't scientifically understand why that happens, but I used to be a bread addict. It was all I ever wanted to eat. I had really intense cravings for dairy too. Now that all that stuff is out of my system though, I don't crave it at all.

Yes, I believe this to be true. The things I crave most are German rye bread, tomatoes, juice, ice cream and potatoes.

When eating some rye bread I finally connected the dots last October. Within half an hour of eating it, I was doubled over with severe stomach cramps, and soon explosive diarrhea. I react very badly to gluten, obviously!

My favourite food all my life was potatoes. It causes me gastrointestinal problems similar to being glutened, with the addition of burning bms.

I used to eat tomatoes several times a day all summer long. I also had migraines especially during the summer, which would last up to three weeks and were terribly debilitating. When I stopped eating tomatoes, the migraines stopped, and are rare now (and never last longer than a day or two).

Juice makes me have symptoms of bladder infection and aching muscles, ice cream gives me terrible gas and bloating, plus brain fog.

So, all my favourite foods are definitely a terrible idea!

A few years ago In November/December i got to where nothing I ate Stayed where it should so I just ate pretzels(not gluten-free). In Jan. I had my capsule endoscopy and they found what they called AVM"s of the small intestine. I now believe it was the fact I soon after found out I had celiac and the pratzels helped contribute to me being so sick.

Sorry for the typos.

I know that I craved potatoes all the time, and am intolerant to them. After a while, I stopped wanting them. (Thank goodness for sweet potatoes, of the marigold family -- they make good fries!)

We are all different, and since being gluten free, I have not craved bread or gluteny things. I have never really been a bread person, but I did eat it, as that is what everybody ate.

What I missed the most was being able to just grab anything off the shelf without thinking. But I hve got over that, and it is not a problem now.

Thought I would crave what I couldn't eat as I am an ex smoker and thought I had an addictive personality.

I really like the diet now, plenty of fruit, veges and meat, with rice and allowable grains. It agrees with me, I never feel starved anymore, and have managed to put on no weight since, which is encouraging, as I would like to loose another two stone at least.

Cathy.

Me too - never could get enough potatoes. Worried if I went out of the country, they might not have any. Late night snacks I craved was popcorn or Tostitos. The healing diet I am on says no nightplants, corn, etc. I really miss popcorn. Never was a bread fan. One bite of rye and instant headache. LindaLee

My evil craving was macaroni and cheese. I ate it almost every day. The last time I did it made me have a panic attack and a migraine that lasted almost 5 days! I still miss it, though.

I used to crave anything that was breaded. I know longer really crave it, but I sure would like to go to PF Changs and order every gluten filled appetiser that they make. I love the lettuce wraps, but would rather order those appetisers

I swear, I kept KRAFT in business when I was a kid. As an adult I switched over to Annies - but I just craved and craved and craved. Quitting diary put an end to that. Boo hoo. What is it about mac & cheese anyway.

Hi I've been told I need a MRI on my bowels , I was booked for a colonoscopy, but because of my sever back issues and trapped nerve it can't be done , the nurse told me I will have to have a manitol drink a hour before the scan , I'm just a bit worried has I have issues with sweeteners like even a little,  I get a weird throat and ears and I've read it is a similar substance , not sure if anyone has had one of these scans or could give me some advise on the drink prep thanks in advance 😄

Hi all ! Can a celiac attack be so intense that it causes your entire body to work in reverse? Meaning really bad pain,  neuropathy and muscle,  jaw pain,  the stomach issues , Horrible anxiety and confusion??  I had a Tums and you would think I ate poison. My jaw and stomach did not like it . Not the norm for me. Things that are simple are just out of control. Anyone ever have this happen??  I'm trying to figure out what I ate or did to bring on a celiac like attack. I had an idea before but yesterday I didn't have any gluten unless it was in a medication ?! Any positive suggestions ??  Thank you

The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.

Tammy, in the food industry, "gluten free" doesn't mean the same thing as "no gluten". As Scott explained, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) allows food companies to use the "gluten-free" label as long as the product does not contain more than 20 ppm (parts per million) of gluten. This number is based on studies the FDA did years ago to determine the reaction threshold for those with celiac disease. And the 20 ppm figure works for the majority of celiacs. There are those who are more sensitive, however, who still react to that amount. There is another, stricter standard known as "Certified Gluten Free" which was developed by a third party organization known as GFCO which requires not more than 10 ppm of gluten. So, when you see "GFCO" or "Certified Gluten Free" labels on food items you know they are manufactured with a stricter standard concerning gluten content. Having said all that, even though you may read the disclaimer on a food item that says the spices may contain wheat, barley or rye (the gluten grains), you should be able to trust that the amount of gluten the spices may contain is so small it allows the total product to meet the requirements of gluten free or certified gluten free labeling. I hope this helps.
