Hi guys - Hope you're all doing peachy.

Here's a question...for any of you coffee drinkers, do you feel that coffee after a meal seems to improve your digestion? I'm finding this seems to be true for me and I'm wondering if any of you would agree or know if there's research out there to prove it (I swear I thought it wasn't good for your digestion, but whatever!)

Also - I've bought Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar. That is gluten free correct? It doesn't say "flavored" anywhere on the bottle.

Yes, yes, yes! And it's so counterintuitive, since for some people (celiac & not) it causes diarrhea. I really don't understand the mechanism (though I have long been curious about it) but I most definitely have felt this beneficial effect for years. And I can barely tolerate eating sweets (other than fruit) without coffee, though that may be partly a flavor habit... chocolate in particular just doesn't appeal to me at all without coffee. On the other hand, drinking it on an empty stomach does sometimes bother me.

And yes the vinegar is Gluten-free, though some people are sensitive to vinegar of all kinds.

Leah, glad to hear you agree...I swear when I was in my early celiac stages (just diagnosed) I couldn't tolerate coffee - but now for some reason I swear it helps break down my food better. Maybe it's because it's so acidic...

My doc is a huge proponent of ending a meal with something acidic whethe rit be some vinegar on a small leafy salad or a cuppa joe. I gotta say I feel much better, too! A dark cup of fresh ground French press coffee with a smidgen of cream really helps me scoot thru that lingering fatigue.

Coffee is just good any time, but I LOVE a good cup after my meal.

I did not know about the digestion thing, but that only makes it better. Not only does it wake us up in the morning, but it also helps us digest food.

You learn something new every day! :)

i was told to stay away from vineger but i still sneak at the pickling jar of onoins ( YUMMY) and it doesnt do anything that im aware of. Leah, about the coffee, i drink cofee abd am still C,cant be drinking enough, how much do you have to drink for it to work and before you feel like your on drugs from the caffiene, i probably have 3-4 and i start getting a bit shaky.

      Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

      The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
