How Fast Can +/- Gluten Diet Have An Effect

hi,

the question, stated as quickly as possible....

i was feeling really awful and I am sure that it is GI related. i was missing work 'cause i was so sick. two people mentioned wheat intolerance. i felt bad enough to try not eating wheat. i stopped and felt better within 24 hours. stayed off for about 3-4 days and then last night had pasta and this morning a croissant and now I feel rotten again. can gluten intolerance give you a dramatic response this quickly or has something else got to be going on?

and now more details for those who haven't changed channels.

34yo. i've been having GERD for over a year. on 60mg prevacid and it still hurts. within the last 3 weeks i've been scoped front and back and drank barium. i'll leave out details that don't matter unless someone here would like elaboration. anyway, I'm always tired it seems (yea, I do have a 6mo kid and work full time but still). during all these procedures I had to take an insane amount of laxatives and then the barium was supposed to stop me right up...well it didn't. i was very loose for several days longer after I was supposed to have recovered. then i drank the barium, still a couple of days to "firm up" and it was during this time that I stopped the gluten.

i seem to have had a more grumpy bowel every since childhood. i always had more gas than others. can gluten sensitivity result in increased flatus?

going to see the doc again in a few days and will talk with him about gluten.

thanks for any input or points towards other threads,

mike

Yes....gluten can lead to those symptoms. You should not go off gluten if you are undergoing tests b/c it will affect the results.

Mike - Yes, sounds like gluten. Everybody is different, but I felt better within 3 days of going gluten free. Even though I didn't feel 100% better for almost a year, I noticed a dramatic improvement very quickly. I tested myself w/ some spelt bread after being gluten-free for a week, and I got very ill immediately. That's when I was sure it was gluten giving me the gi trouble.

I agree w/ Phila, stay on the gluten until all of your testing is done. Make sure you are tested for Celiac. Don't assume the doctor knows to look for it. A lot of them still think that it is a very uncommon disease.

Good luck, I hope you get some answers soon.

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
