ok question of slite stupidity. If your working with food, and you are able to smell it, like im making a fish sandwich for someone and i can smell the fish(breaded) does that meen im breathing in particals of the fish?? Or is sent something diffrent, just trying to make sure im not breathing in constant gluten making peoples foods (im extra carefull about my hands and what not)

I'm not entirely sure about the scent itself, but if you're working in a place where there's crumbs flying around, you might inhale those...

Is is possible for you to get a job at a place that doesn't serve food? At least that way your job wouldn't be an extra gluten-related stress for you...

Lister Rising Star

unfortunatly im not in a finacial sound place right now to try to switch jobs, plus i dont even have a high school diploma so my working enviorments are really limited

Mango04 Enthusiast

yeah but if you're working a minimum wage type job there are other options. What about Blockbuster, some sort of retail store at the mall....constructuion workers make good money....if you looked around I'm sure you could find something.

Lister- I LOVE your new avatar. It's great!!!! And your question is DEFINITely not stupid.

I know that flour can stay airborne for at least four hours so if you've got flour, breading and things being fried, it's not good. :( The smell wouldn't gluten you, but the flying particles of doom could.

I would definitely see what you can do about finding other work. What do you do where you work (like waiter? server? cook?). Maybe you could bartend or host or something that gets you away from the kitchen??? Just a thought.

i worked in a bakery and had to quit, and at the time, i was also a student. it was a difficult decision, but i was in and out of the hospital after work because i was getting so ill. it was not worth it; i would look for another job as soon as possible.

Lister,

When I was unknowingly glutened from the dust created from the drywall paste, it was getting in my hair and on my clothes, shoes, and even on my pet poodle. When I finished for the day I had to wash my hair and I'm sure I got glutened that way, also from the clothes and the dog, etc. Are you being careful not to carry home the particles from working around that stuff all day? Getting into another type of job would definitely help. Perhaps if you went to the board of labor and explained your situation they could help. When I became disabled and unable to work as a nurse they actually paid for some computer training. You seem to be very adept at computers, perhaps you could find another line of work especially if your doctor would back you up that you shouldn't be working there.

i dont work around flour, just like pre breaded things, so its coated onto the product and froze, i just toss it into a fryer so i dont think particals would be a issus, even though when i open a rack of buns, i make sure to turn away and not breathe until i leave the area afraid of breathing in things(everyone laughs at me at work :( )

as for what i do at work, i work upfront and in the back and everything else, i work a crappy job as a superviser for burgerking w00t :(

Mango04 Enthusiast

If your job is crappy, why don't you look for something else or strive for something better? Just because you don't have a hs diploma now doesn't mean you have to be stuck at burger king forever.

If you're sure you're not inhaling gluten I wouldn't worry about that though.

Dear Lister,

there are options for better jobs. List all your good qualities, be sure to include that you eat healthy food.

There are good companies and employers that look at other things besides your education. You can have a Phd but if you are out carousing all night, you do not make a good employee when you drag into the workplace hungover.

everyone respects a person that is trying to better themselves, or they should anyway.

labyrinth Publications has books on all the computer office programs, they are about $20.00 each or you can go to the library, these courses are designed to be self taught, just start on page one & go thru the book. If you have no money & no computer you can go to any library and use their computer etc. Even a junior college, I bet if you explained your situation and asked for library privileges that you could get them & maybe some part time work.

You could also check around (gastro or pedi docs) to see if there are any moms that need a gluten-free babysitter.

make a list...

You have to want & believe in something better before you can get it.

lister - before the bakery, i worked in the part of the store that only sold the baked goods... so i was around pre-made stuff without it flying around, and i was still incredibly ill. just a thought.

the other things are great suggestions. i actually work for an online company - so even when i'm sick i dont have to get out of my jammies. trust me - everything happens for a reason - i am strong believer in that.

When my wife attempted to open the online card in the store with a cashier, it would not work. We then showed the owner the link to the card, the online receipt that I got upon purchase, and even my bank statement confirming the purchase. That did not satisfy her, since she said she needed the link to open to reveal the gift ID num. They even admitted they had a systems problem around that time.

Was the card itself lost or just the record or both?

We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
