Can You Be Overwieght And Have Celiac Disease?

Everyone I know including my doctor thinks that you can't be overwieght and have this disease. They don't understand how when your body is being starved of nutriants how you can be overwieght. From what I have seen on other posts on here that many celiacs are overwieght. Frankly I don't know either and don't know how to explain it to them. Does anyone know the explanation to this?

I don't know any other way to explain it, but if you google for the NIH consensus paper on celiac disease, you'll find that even they note that you don't have to be under- or normal- weight to have celiac.

According to Dr. Peter Green, in his book "Celiac Disease--A Hidden Epidemic"--

"In a study done by the Mayo Clinic in 2003, approximmately 20 percent of patients diagnosed with Celiac Disease were overweight; many were obese, effectively eliminating the definition of Celiac Disease as a "wasting disease"."

In my own case, I was always about 20 pounds overweight until just before I was diagnosed--I was very ill and lost 15 lbs pretty quickly.

I've lost 110 pounds since my dx of Celiac and going gluten-free. I was skinny minny growing up, but in my early 20's I started putting on weight despite the fact that I was always on a diet and ate very little. It was explained to me this way, in some people the body is so malnourished and is starving and goes into survival mode, when it does this it holds onto the only thing it can which is the fat cells. I was classified as morbidly obese and I was so frustrated because I didn't eat that much at all. Now that I'm gluten-free, I eat whatever I want as long as it's gluten-free and treats in moderation, but the proof is in the weight loss. I went from a size 3x to a size 10.

I was(am some) overweight when I finally was dx. Since Sept. I have lost over 35 pounds. I stayed pretty stable from Jan.-July but started losing again, without trying.

Ok I saw this thread and felt compelled to post a reply.

YES you can be overweight and be a celiac.

I was Diagnosed months ago and i have been overweight all my life and i mean overweight. When my doctor told me i had celiac i went home and did research and thought ...This cant be me! I've never had trouble gaining weight! In fact i convinced myself it was a miss diagnosis until i went back to the Dr. and questioned him about being overweight and that i did not fit the typical celiac symptom of weight loss or had trouble gaining weight... he told me that it didn't matter ...that they found out that i was a celiac by accident they thought i had IBS till they took a biopsy of my intestines and did blood work to discover i was a celiac.

His final word was : We found out you were a celiac before it got to its advanced stages...had i gone on eating like i always did i would have eventually suffered from severe weight loss. Some people are just in different stages...thankfully they caught mine early.

You can also be in advanced stages like I was, and still be overweight.

I was slim through my twenties but in my thirties gained about 35 pounds which melted away this winter when I finally got really sick. Now I am glad I had the weight to lose.

I am another former heavyweight. Once I cut the gluten the weight came right off.

The lady that first mentioned Celiac to me(she had it) had always been 40 or so lbs overweight. She said "I'm one of the big ones...lucky me!" She might not have had the perfect weight but she had the best attiude! I remember saying "It CAN'T be wheat! Wheat is in EVERYTHING!!!" She nodded her head yes while laughing her head off. She was right! PJ

      I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

      good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.

      I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

      What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks

      I would not think store bought yogurt would contain gluten unless it possibly could be through an added flavoring or coloring ingredient. Otherwise, it should be naturally gluten free.  Keep in mind that some companies are capitalizing on people's fears and ignorance (nothing personal intended) by labeling foods "gluten free" that are just that way by the nature of what they are. They are hoping to create a marketing edge over their competitors by adding "gluten free" because they know it may catch attention of those new to the celiac/gluten sensitivity experience without having to cost them anything in the way of changing their manufacturing process or doing testing.
