Osteoporosis And Medication

Just been advised that I have osteopenia, just about 10 points off full osteoporosis. Considering some of the medications used to rebuild bone. Most have GI or esophagus irritation type symptoms. Have any of you been on them, and which was tolerated best?

Thanks for any input,

Sue

Sue, another problem with those medications appears to be the potential of necrosis of the jaw (as in rotting away). Plus, they don't really rebuild bone, but prevent your body from getting rid of old cells. So, your bone looks denser on the scans, but it will consist of older cells, which will be more brittle. Not exactly an improvement, if you ask me.

The best thing to do is to be tested for your levels of vitamin D and Calcium and Magnesium. Since your body can't use the Calcium and Magnesium without sufficient Vitamin D, and many celiacs are deficient in it, because of malabsorption, you might have to supplement with it (the best way is with cod liver oil, try the Carlson brand, it doesn't taste bad), and especially with Magnesium as well.

I don't know how old you are, but younger people (especially under 30) can often rebuild their bones by diet and supplementation and avoid osteoporosis. But even older people can reverse it to some degree.

Also, weight bearing exercise will strengthen your bones and help with the reversal of the osteopenia.

I've been on Fosamax for 2+ years and haven't had any GI problems, but I know people who just can't tolerate it. I have a slight effervesent "fizzie" sensation the first couple of seconds after I swallow it but that's about all. I can't say its rebuilt any of my bones 'cause the dexascan didn't demonstrate any improvement in density but maybe at 55 years old you can't expect much. Maybe the best I can hope for is to slow the bone loss down or arrest it. I have osteopenia as well. The odd thing is it's worse in my femoral neck than in my lower spine. Why would it be worse ove some parts of your skeleton than others?

I was diagnosed with Osteopenia as well, and I have been taking Viactiv chews for a while now. They do not upset my stomach at all, and they are tasty too! :D

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:

Hi @Atl222 As @trents points out, there could be many reasons for this biopsy result.  I am interested to know, is your gastroenterologist concerned?  Also, are your blood tests showing steady improvement over the years? I remember when I had my last biopsy, several years after diagnosis, mine came back with with raised lymphocytes but no villous damage, too! In my own case, my consultant wasn't remotely concerned - in fact, he said I might still get this result even if all I ever did was eat nothing but rice and water.   My coeliac blood tests were still steadily improving, albeit slowly, which was reassuring.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @Atl222! Yes, your increased lymphocytes could be in response to oats or it could possibly be cross contamination from gluten that is getting into your diet from some unexpected source but not enough to damage the villi. And I'm certain that increased lymphocytes can be caused by other things besides celiac disease or gluten/oats exposure. See attachment. But you might try eliminating oats to start with and possibly dairy for a few months and then seek another endoscopy/biopsy to see if there was a reduction in lymphocyte counts.

This is a solid, well-reasoned approach. You’re right that “koji” by itself doesn’t indicate gluten status, and the risk really does come down to which grain is used to culture it. The fact that you directly contacted Eden Foods and received a clear statement that their koji is made from rice only, with no wheat or barley, is meaningful due diligence—especially since Eden has a long-standing reputation for transparency. While the lack of gluten labeling can understandably give pause, manufacturer confirmation like this is often what people rely on for traditionally fermented products. As always, trusting your body after trying it is reasonable, but based on the information you gathered, your conclusion makes sense.
