6 Year Old Grant's Story --any Ideas?

I have a friend whose son has some symptoms sound somwhat familiar with others posting on this site. She is getting ready to take him to dr but thought we might get some input to point them in the right direction.

Grant was born pretty much solidly for first 1 1/2 years of life. Doctors said he was just colicky. The first 12 weeks he couldn't nurse laying down or sideways. His mom had to lay down and he had to sit up to nurse. It was awful. He would jerk away after a few sips because it hurt so bad. Drs told his Mom it was a reflux problem.

He has bad stomach aches and intestinal problems or just stomach aches only. (goes between the two) Drs even thought he has gas problem since food often makes him bloated but anti gas medicine doesn't help. When the pain gets too severe he throws up. He often has adversion to food because many foods make him feel bad. He does best when eating little amounts often throughout the day. He has the "dumping syndrowme" and food probably goes through too fast to absorb. His poop is green at least 80 percent of the time. He feels worse at night.

Tomato based foods, spicy food seem to make him feel bad. He seems to gravitate toward bread. He eats a lot of veggies and fruits. When he is really sick his mom feels like he has an odd color to it. (Paler than normal)

When Grant eats he eats little things all day long and can't seem to fill up. Lately he has been up a lot at night and can't lay down if he has thrown up. (heartburn?)

We would appreciate any ideas you have that could help his mom get pointed in the right direction. Thanks so much! :) Kendra

I don't have any ideas to help. If she is willing she could request a celiac panel and even blood tests for allergies. Those aren't always accurate but would give her a start.

If doctors won't pursue the celiac panel or it is negative she could also have enterolab run a stool test for him for gluten and dairy. When I got my test in May they were offering them together if you got the whole panel which includes gene testing $369. They also do soy/egg/yeast for $199. I have read elsewhere that they plan on offering allergy tests in the future but don't know where they are on it.

Check out enterolab Open Original Shared Link.

It sounds like he could have a problem with gluten with the bloating and gas as well as not really digesting his food but I'm not sure.

I didn't ask a doctor about this actually. I did ask several doctors a long time ago and they told me gluten has nothing to do with hashimoto's. One of them told me to do a gluten challenge to test for celiac, but at the time I was in graduate school so couldn't afford to be even more ill than I was. If you have the symptoms, I really don't advise you to do a gluten challenge. It messed me up mentally and physically for months. At the same time, I benefitted from doing the challenge in the sense that it convinced me that all my symptoms were truly from gluten - even stuff like insomnia! So now I am terrified to eat gluten, whereas before I would have a little once in a while and not notice anything dramatic.

I am in a similar situation where I can't feasibly do a gluten challenge but have all the symptoms and I have 2 celiac genes. I'm curious if your doctor advised you to eat as if you had a diagnosis or if they were more dismissive about it.

Negative, although I had most of the symptoms of celiac disease. I now eat as if I had a diagnosis.

While it's always important to approach internal use of essential oils with caution and ideally under the guidance of a qualified professional, your experience highlights the potential of complementary approaches when traditional medicine falls short. Many in the community are also interested in the intersection of natural wellness and gluten-free living, particularly for managing systemic inflammation and its various symptoms, so sharing your story is valuable. Your observation that it may also be helping with bloating is fascinating, as that could point to an overall reduction in inflammation. Thank you for sharing what is working for you!
