Ty's Gluten Free Anniversary

Tomorrow (Friday) will be Ty's gluten-free anniversary. It's been one year.

I'm unsure how it's going. He never really had any outward symptoms - irritibility, I suppose, but he does have a big brother, so being irritable can be part of that...

He had gained 6 pounds in the past year, and depending on how accurate our scale is, just lost 2. He's gotten taller, but still a lightweight (3 months shy of 7 years old and still less than 40 lbs :o - as reference his non-celiac brother will be 9 in 3 months and he's not even 50 lbs yet.)

He's definitely sticking to the diet...he even asks me sometimes if I'm sure whatever I'm giving him is gluten-free.

He's still a picky eater and I'm finding it a bit tricky to sneak in extra calories - he doesn't like butter/margarine, but I can put gobs of sour cream on his potatoes. If he doesn't see me, I can put skim milk powder in his milk. I don't think he eats enough, and when he does eat it's often not heavy in calories. He always says he's not hungry. Mostly though, he seems a bit happier than before.

From my perspective, gluten-free doughs are a pain to work with. My muffins come out all weirdly shaped and stick to the paper liner if I use one, or stick to the pan if I don't. I still can't make a decent bread/bun, but can make awesome breadsticks thanks to Carriefaith's recipe. I make the best banana bread I've ever made...better than the gluteny kind thanks to the Incredible Edible Gluten Free Cookbook for Kids, and I'm the only person I know who can make graham crackers from scratch.

An up and down year...I hope things will continue to improve and that my little fella will grow up to be a big strapping guy.

PS...if any of you think I'm really freaky for remembering the day he went gluten-free, it's the same day as his little cousin's birthday, so that's how I remembered.

Happy gluten-free Anniversary Day for Ty!

I think it's great that you remember and can look back on where you are now. Congratulations for making it to the 1 year milestone!!

What recipe do you use for the graham crackers? I would like to attempt those sometime soon. If it is in Incredible, Edible, then I have that book. I just made rolled sugar cookies from that book last night, which you originally turned me on to!

Bread is so hard ~ I have found a recipe that works for me. But I have practiced a lot. At first I made it in muffin tins, then mini-loafs, and now in a pan just a little smaller than the regular pans. I actualy recently took a pic and when I upload it, I'll probably make it my avatar. I spent HOURS before vacation making hamburger buns and hotdog buns for vacation and then she didn't want buns!

My daughter's one-year gluten-free anniversary is this month too. We've come a long way! Congrats to you and Ty!

I made a yummy gluten-free zucchini bread for Annie recently, and I both greased and floured the pan (with rice flour), which kept the zucchini bread from sticking nicely. I'm going to try that on our next Ener-G corn muffins, to see if that won't help keep them from sticking.

Who is the Incredible Edible cookbook by? What's its entire name? I'm looking for a good sugar cookie recipe that's gluten-free.

Isn't it great to be a year out! Happy Anniversary :P

Are you and your husband big people? I ask this because it just might be that your kids are normal for their genetic make up. Both my ds and dd are small for their age (both have been tested and do not have it at this time, I am the one with celiac). However, I am small frame and so is my dh. My kids have never been over the 20th percentile. Most of the time they are around the 10-15 percentile. My son is hardly ever hungry, I can count on two hands the times he has asked for food, he is 8 years. His main goal in life is to play not eat!

Just a different perspective that your son sounds completly normal to me (I am not a doc just another mom with a great son)!

Cheri - I use the Bette Hagman recipe but cut back on the cinnamon. Did you give me your bread recipe? That's the Twin Valley/Hagman sorghum, right? I'll give it another shot.

and Hez, no we are small but tall people. I am 5'8" about 125lbs and my husband is 6" tall and just had to move to a 34" waist for his pants. He was a 30" or 32" when we met. Glenn was always the tallest kid in class until grade 8 or 9 when everyone else caught up. I didn't start growing until grade 9 and then very slowly so it was a surprise to people when I was 5'8" because it snuck up on them, I'd always been so short. I always say with the growth charts that my kids peaked at birth. 8lb 2oz for Walker and 7lb 2oz for Ty. He'd have been bigger but I was on a gestational diabetes diet for about 6 weeks until they complained that I wasn't gaining any weight and did another test and decided it had been a false positive.

Well, time for us to grab a gluten-free cupcake and head out to our cousin's birthday.

Oh yeah, I had decided to take a break from baking hamburger buns and so I bought some Kinnikinnick buns. Those things smell disgusting! :wacko: At least mine smelled decent. Looks - not so good.

We are opposite! I was the tallest in my 5th and 6th grade class. I did all of my growing early on, dh was a late bloomer. I am now short, only 5'4"! So I guess my theory on little genes does not apply to your family <_< I hope the birthday party was fun.

Linda ~ yep, that's the recipe ~ sorghum bread by Twin Valley Mills and Bette Hagman. I think I gave you all my tips about rising it in the pans in the oven too. Like I said, it took me a bit to get it to come out ok in a regular pan, but Carleigh liked it better than the stone frozen bread and I was so stocked that it actually had bread holes, ha! So, I kept practicing. But, she still loves banana bread too!

      Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

      I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

      Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
